shift knobs, what are you using other then the zhp?

so the time has come to replace my shift knob. i have a lux car and have been using the stock wood shifter, but like all old bmw shifters the two plastic nubs inside are now worn and the knob comes off, usually on that 2nd gear shift, landing in the rear seat, an turning the driver into a retard for a second....

so what are you using? apparently bmw shift knobs dont cost $20 anymore. id like to keep stockish height or higher. thinking of finding a old style bmw mushroom knob, i kinda like the condor shifter my friend has, looks weird but feels great, its like $130 for a knob though... i havent seen anyone with a stock of old knobs only the ergonomic design, there probably NLA now and carry the same price as the condor one. figured id start a thread as im not interested in using the zhp knob, i have one in my part pile thats beat up, i just dont like it.

Stock knob, not wood. Love it.

      I'm using this:

Essentially the original knob, but it's special order BMW Individual Daytona Violet leather. I also have a new clutch, shift detents, fluid, transmission and engine mounts. I think it's pretty much perfect this way. I have a spare ZHP shift knob but I don't feel compelled to use it.

I installed my new ZHP illumination shift knob from leatherz.com and it's incredible. I'm not sure why anyone would consider buying anything else. It's weighted just right, looks like it belongs in the E36 M3, is the perfect size and height, and you get to keep the illumination feature. $150 shipped and arrived in 6 days. Worth every penny.

If everything you touch while driving a car (seat, steering wheel, pedals, shift knob) feels like a million bucks, the car feels like a million bucks. If you skimp out on buying vital pieces that are used while driving, you will either never realize why you dislike your car or you'll regret buying whatever half-ass product you poorly invested in.

I'm a fan of the original lighted shift knob when it comes to looks and that originality intangible - quite frankly I think the ZHP knob is kind of ugly.

If a weighted throw is really important to you for some reason, I would add weight to the relay shaft such as by the solder/hose clamp method. Precision is more important to me than a weighted feel, which is why I would much rather spend the money on delrin shifter bushings and make sure all the other wear parts are good to go as well.

Besides the metal ring, what is wrong with the ZHP knob? I think the stock knobs are too tall and skinny looking.

What's wrong with the metal ring? I think it looks fine. You could always get it anodized, painted, or powder coated if you really disliked it.

Bimmerworld Jaffster ftw. Makes shifting with an ssk so much easier due to increased leverage.

F10 M5 knob. Goes great with the 420G.

Nothing else inside of the car has a metallic look. It's a minor complaint, it's still my favorite OEM shifter.

I get that it's functional, but it looks like you have part of a dildo sticking out of your shifter area.
