    Requesting help with DMTL pinout

    Ever since I got my S54 wagon running in late 2019, I've been having a constant issue with the DMTL. It wasn't until today that I realized my troubleshooting has been focused on the 3-pin leak detection pump and not the 4-pin DMTL because of some generalizations and possible mislabeling (thanks Bentley manual). I think I made a breakthrough tonight, however I'll need some help from people who still have functional M3s.

    For my 09/2001 M3, there are 4 wires that go to the DMTL plug: Red/White, Black/Green, Brown/Blue, and Black/Red. Red/White goes to switched power so we don't need to worry about that for now. The big ticket items are the other 3 wires. Black/Green and Brown/Blue should terminate in x60004 but I don't know if they're supposed to be in slots 18&20 or 28&30 (or some combination of the two). The Black/Red wire may terminate in x60003 but I'm not entirely sure. I believe it passes through the x6011 8-pin connector in the ebox before it reaches the DME, so that may help with tracing.

    Because my original chassis is long gone and this issue isn't well documented on the internet nor is it in the big book of E46 (again, thanks for the vague labels Bentley), I'm turning to the other e46 M3 owners out there for help. If you have a 2002 MY M3, please let me know where on your DME harnesses these wires terminate. This will bring me one step closer to passing at the California smog ref.

    This is the body harness pin out for the DMTL connector on all m3s.
    Pin 1 brown/blue x17140 goes to pin 20 x60004
    Pin 2 black/red x17140 goes to pin 18 x60004
    Pin 3 black/green x17140 goes to pin 30 x60004

    Depending ok what year your wagon was you will need to repin...

    On ms45/45.1 sedan/touring
    pin 2 x17140 goes to pin 2 x60004

    Ok ms43 sedan/touring
    Pin 2 x17140 goes to a separate 8 pin body harness connector called x6011 that that plugs into a matching 8 pin connector on the engine harness that actually routes back through the x60003 engine harness connector.

      That explains why my black/red wire terminates at x6011 (pin 7) and from there becomes a light grey wire that goes back into the body harness. I didn't see this wire in x60003 though, but I can double check. Thanks for the other wires though! So far that setup has been working without codes. Once I figure out if my black/red wire actually ends up in the DME harness, I'll be good to go.

        2 years later, I finally passed the smog ref inspection and legally registered my swapped wagon in the state of California! The DMTL wiring ended up being a mixture of of pre- and post-09/2001 diagrams, working as follows:
        • DMTL switch: BR/BL -> pin 30 of x60004
        • DMTL pump: SW/GN -> pin 20 of x60004
        • DMTL heater: SW/RT (which becomes a grey wire in my touring) -> pin 18 of x60004
        I'm not sure if the wiring in the M3 or the wagon was screwed up (maybe I'll dig into this at a later time) but this is what worked for me. Hopefully this helps someone in the future if they run into the same problem!
