Air Filter Question — White Foam

Asking for a friend — true story.

My friend (not on this forum) with an e46 m3 just bought a MANN air filter. It has a white piece of foam at the bottom. He asked me to check mine as both of our old filters do not have it.

Is this a new style filter?

I've seen this before on air filters for other makes/models. I guess it's there as an extra filtration element

I just bought mine a few weeks ago and also had the white foam. The one I replaced did not. Haven’t noticed any issues.

Recently replaced mine, the white pre-filter has been replaced for wider filter material. Bought from FCP Euro, same part #, 6 years apart.

I wouldn't worry about old vs new style.

I recall seeing the extra layer of foam on my air filter when I was doing my first replacement years ago, and swapped to a new filter without that extra foam. No apparent issues with either one.
