Cheapest way to an OE steering wheel?

I bought my vehicle with an autocarbon flat bottom carbon fiber/alcantara steering wheel which is nice but I am thinking about getting an OE steering wheel to replace it.

I see that new steering wheels are $900 and wondered if anyone could suggest a place that re-wraps these to new factory spec. If the cost of finding a suitable wheel and getting it to look brand new costs 75% of a new wheel I'll likely just buy a new wheel but don't want to spend $900 if it's not necessary.

I haven't ever looked into get a steering wheel refurbished so any help would be appreciated as to who does it well.

I've ordered several wheels from Ledermanz on ebay. Just ping him directly and he will quote whatever you want. I would guess a stock wheel is around $500-$600.

^+1 I have one of their wheels in my E36, going to be doing one for the E46 soon as well.

I bought a core from cobywheel for $250 and then his re-wrap was $300, plus $30 s/h, so $580 total. There's a good thread on re-wrap differences between vendors but I call your attention to the core pricing from cobywheel.

I will say I've been pleasantly surprised with his re-wrap as the leather is much better wearing than OEM. He wraps over top of existing leather which offers pro's and con's.

I have the same issue but have not been satisfied with COBY wheels work, I am looking for someone who can do it OEM Style. The only solution I can think off right now is sending an SMG core to Europe to get it done and the problem with sending it to Europe and or the States is it'll cost close to a new one from the factory LOL.

Any particular reason you are unsatisfied? Was thinking of going that route in the near future for a swap in alcantara wheel and keeping my original.

I had an alcantara steering wheel done from them and if you compare to an OE alcantara wheel, the stitching is off and it was done on top of the oe leather too. The OE leather should have been removed and the wrap done right but it wasnt.

Why would you send it to the states? The euro guys just do most everything better when it comes to attention to detail. Of course if you are price sensitive it's always good enough I suppose.

Wrapped on top of leather? Lmao.

Well because of me visiting the states twice a year i would reduce shipping costs. To send to Europe would be quiet expensive and to get it back the same. FYI I am located in BAHRAIN.

I've had enough of the quality issues and just want to have two SMG steering wheels done to OE perfection, One alcantara and one nappa leather

I'll likely just a buy an OE wheel and sell my aftermarket one, that might be the best and cheapest option if re-wrapped wheels aren't quite 100%.

Probably the safest route. I just bumped the thread I had referred to by adding cobywheel photos.

Yeah looks to me I will have to send mine to Europe with someone going there.

I had a Tainik leather wheel for a thousand or so miles. Beautiful quality and stitching, comparable to OE, but I didn’t like the smooth leather. It felt dirty easily and isn’t that great to touch and hold compared to the grainy stuff. There was a nearly new OE one on here for $600 last year and I jumped on it. Much better. As far as I know all the wraps are smooth nappa, not whatever grainy leather bmw uses.

Then I moved that wheel to the E39 and bought a new OE alcantara one for my E46. I wanted to go back to the clean one button ZCP setup. Tischer had them on sale and since they include the now incredibly expensive ZCP trim, it was actually a good deal compared to a wrap. Clean alcantara is great, we’ll see if I can keep it that way. It’s not a daily ..

I just realized my friend in Turkey does amazing work with oem level Esther material. They/he did my X5M performance steering wheel and it looks oem. I just sent him a message to see if he can hook me up as I can’t travel to Turkey right now due to Covid restrictions. I’ll keep you guys updated on how it goes.

I love the look of the ZCP wheel but would miss the ability to change tracks/volume on the wheel and cruise as well, my car is almost exclusively used just riding around in and around town so those things are kind of nice to have on the wheel.
