I took a close listen today and am not sure if this sound is what he is referring to. You can hear it a 9-11 seconds, 17, 20 (the loudest) and 35 seconds. To me it does not sound like it, but I am not really sure what sound to be listening for. Any ideas if that could be the chain (or something else)?

Quick update - had my car into a different shop (that also specializes in European cars) for the air conditioning. Asked him whether he could hear anything, and said yes he could hear the chain. He doesn't get into heavy jobs like that, but said he could hear it, and that I should address it. I know one other mechanic who I trust (did my SMG - 6MT conversion for me), and I'm going to ask him. But I am thinking it is going to have to be done.... Oh well, it's only money....

I might argue that the stretched chain can rub on the oil pump neck. I rebuild my engine at 150k, there was some scoring on the oil pump. I put new chains and tensioners and it was much tighter than before. I also did not hear any chain noise with my car, I rebuild for a different reason. Ideally, you'd want new oil pump gear and cam gears but they don't sell these new separately. I also compaired the used and new chains and it was definitely stretched. I wouldn't say these are a common replacement item on the s54 but a motor that rev's high, chain or belt would stretch over time. Not only the chain would stretch but the wear on the plastic guides also causes a 'stretching' effect. Not detrimental to the s54 engine since they don't generally break except for the upper chain guide.

There was some discussion about that very scoring in another thread and everyone said it was normal. It might be common but I wouldn't say it's normal just as you say.

OP: all engine timing chains make noise but this is normal noise, so if you ask anyone and I expect they will say they can hear the chain, or normal chain noise. Did they hear abnormal chain noise?

They said yes, but I still can't hear it. One thing that puzzles me a bit is that the car has not thrown any codes or faults (even shadow). I would have thought that if this is an issue there would be some camshaft position sensor code, or misfire code, or something. If there is an issue, would you expect to see such codes before the situation becomes critical?

* leaking tensioner check valve will cause cold start chain rattle until oil pressure built up. No code
* broken chain guide can cause chain noise. No code.
* uneven engine speed could cause chain noise. It could have code but not relate to chain condition.

The head SHOULD come off when doing the timing chain to avoid oil leaks around the timing cover. You can pull the valve cover and check for slack in the chain. I'd imagine there is some sort of lash spec somewhere? There are a couple of plastic chain guides. If the upper guide that the tensioner pushed on broke, you could have excess lash in the chain which would wear the plastic guides and increase noise and wear.
This is a more common issue in the turbocharged engines. The N20 has a class action lawsuit for the timing chain.
Not a common thing in the S54 but it can certainly happen.
