Floor drain plug rust repair

Has anyone repaired rust around the floor drain plugs? One of them appeared to leak a while back and the surrounding metal is perforated.

Easiest way to fix is with fibreglass repair kit but I'm not super keen on that. Gonna ask a body shop or see if I can get a mobile welder to come out

Structure wise still looks strong, but until all of the coating is stripped off we can't tell how big are the holes. If they are not larger than couple millimeters then I would use POR-15 to coat over the area and fix the source of the leak.

Something must have somehow pushed up on the plug and separated the adhesive holding it in, the surrounding sheet metal and passenger side is fine.



I think I'm just gonna fibreglass it, with proper prep it will be fine. I've ground down all the surrounding areas back to solid metal, enough healthy surface area to latch onto with the fabric and resin. But before doing so, use POR15 metal ready to ensure rust does not spread. Apply a few layers of plain or twill weave with different fibre orientations (not chopped strand-mat that comes with the 3M kit) on the top and bottom. Then paint with POR15 and top coat with rock chip guard.

OPs car spent a good amount of time in Canada as a daily IIRC.

Not sure on the adhesive, I just used seam sealer on the rest of the intact plugs. For this one I patched it with multiple layers of fibreglass, then POR15. I think I used some sort of generic Canadian hardware store undercoat - sorry I don't recall what it is

Haha yup, not something you guys have to deal with. Forgot if I mentioned it to you but I had both rocker panels fully cut out and new ones welded in back in 2016 (under BMW Canada rust warranty) - car hasn't seen salt since

If you live in a ‘summer all year round’ climate I wouldn’t be worried.

I live in a cold climate where they salt the roads and I have yet to see one that is NOT rotted out, so it seems to be directly related to that.
