SMG Conversion - Cruise Control Not Working

My car is currently in the shop for an SMG conversion. Everything is done except the cruise control does not work. The cc light comes on, but the car won't hold a speed. The shop has done dozens of these conversions, so I have a high level of confidence they know what they're doing. They've double checked the wiring and believe it is correct, and think it may be a problem with loading the proper files into the computer.

Based on my research I've identified two potential causes of the problem: first, they did not use the hard to find "brown" clutch pedal switch (pn 61 31 9 122 700), and instead used the readily available "black" clutch pedal switch, and second, I don't think they coded the computer to remove the clutch interlock to allow the car to start even if the clutch pedal isn't pushed in.

The car's production date is 6/2002 which I believe means it's not the HP DME, if that matters.

Anyone been down this road before? I'd love to get my car back with working cruise control...

Thanks! It looks like at the 8:33 mark of that video he's using a black clutch pedal switch, so I've passed it on to my mechanic to see if he wired it the same way. I'll post an update once we get to the bottom of it.

It’s likely you have the wrong clutch switch.

Does it have to be the brown switch, or will cruise control work with a switch that's in stock at the dealer?

I had a failed brown switch on my factory 6 speed, and was forced to use the black switch...no cruise.
            Brown switch is nla.
I ordered a "701" which is the euro module. This and some coding should get the car back to normal.
This module is also not currently in stock at the vendor, so I cannot verify its functions.
I'm a little pissed about the lack of factory parts support for a model that is still "current".

They will supercede to the black "898" which has clutch/ews start but no cruise control.
Annoyingly, those that still advertise the brown switch will send you the 898 instead.

I was afraid that might be the case but thanks for the info. I suspect that the switch in the video posted above by Petener is a 701.

I don't give a shit about cruise control and have probably used it twice in my life but it's still fucked up how these idiots nla'd it.

So what are you guys supposed to do?

As I get older, l find that I use the cruise more, especially with the explosion of revenue generating cameras on the roadways.
The Euro market cars don;t have the clutch safety function, but some of the market has cruise, so coding is one possible solution.
A second solution is to backdate my 2004 to the older style mechanical switch. Not too keen on this option when I should have the parts replacement support of the factory.

I had an order in at my dealer for a rear tail light panel for my E30 M3 and got it after 7 years, so maybe demand for these clutch modules will build.

Your options are to tune out the cruise interlock entirely (not sure what the behavior would be if you depressed the clutch while cruise is engaged), retrofit the euro switch and code out the starter interlock, or retrofit the 2001 style switches.

Solved: my mechanic cannibalized a brown clutch switch out of his personal M3, and that fixed the cruise control. I think he's going to try to get a European switch (61 31 9 122 701) and go that route to get his car working. Thank you to everyone who helped out with this!

This explains so much. I now understand the issue. I haven't had cruise for 3 years since I did my swap. Sounds like I might have to go parts hunting for a brown clutch switch though.
