    SS Catted Section 1 Opinion

I cheaped out and welded some 200 cell magnaflows in to an OE section one when doing my headers. I’ve been eyeballing a SS catted section one now to replace this, I think for no other reason than I haven’t turned a wrench on the car in a little while, and felt I could have made this decision better earlier on. I wanted to soundboard here and see- would it be worth the steep cost? Is there any performance or auditory benefit switching from equal cell magnaflows to the HJS’s? Thanks for input!

I'm in the same boat. I wanted to buy a set with HJS cats in the GB, but that wasn't a great deal and the wait was long. I had the magnaflow 200 cell and they seemed to flow fine, though I'd wager HJS flows even better than them. The magnaflows didn't cut down on smell all the way - I also bet HJS does.

I don't think the improvement is worth the $2300 retail (minus what you sell existing pipes for) or even the $1,700-1800 GB (after tax) price.

Or, for not too much $ (about $800 for both), you can get the premium GESI, but I can only find 300 cell. I bet they'd clean up the smell better and flow as well as the magnaflow. You can find the Gesi on ebay/amzn.

I'm still undecided. My goal was to get the car to pass smog without removing the headers, but given the recent changes to CA smog, I still have to flash back to stock anyway so now I'm not as motivated to get cats in (not the daily)

I don't think you're going to have much of a difference in sound or power if you are going to swap out the cats. Might as well just leave them as is.

Do you have a link to these GESE cats? I see forum posts for E90's about them, but nothing for sale.

S14 I pulled this randomly, looks like plenty of vendors offer them though. Search 2.5” in/out gesi catalytic converter.

Can anyone with supersprint confirm this?

gotcha, I was thinking they were e46 m3 specific section 1!

The HJS cut the smell more than Magnaflow’s but its not OEM-level of scrubbing, which is understandable given they are performance cats.

Tbonem3 also- thanks for the Gesi recommendation. I’ve been doing some reading on it as an option. In retrospect I think that would have been the best choice the first time around when I put the magnaflows in. I think at that time for the cats and weld I was in for $550. The Gesi would have likely been around $900 or so all in, which would have been worth it, and a better middle ground (and maybe best choice for my needs) between the magnaflows and the HJS

                    Just curious…

Can’t you buy the HJS cats separately ?

…instead of it being part of the SuperSprint Section 1 ?

I’ve seen it before here on the forum, hence I ask.

loudspeaker69 all I can find when I look is the substrate- which I think would require some more fab work (reducers welded on?) to incorporate in to the oe pipes. By the time you add it all together, buying the SS or fabspeed options is probably equivalent price. Would like to be wrong however, and see a completed assembly similar to GESI or MF out there for sale

                        ^what he said

HJS cats are around 700 ea retail so by the time you piece it together you're not saving much.

I run HJS 200 cell cats in mine. I get better emissions results that pre facelift stock. Here in Europe they actually still stick a sniffer in the tailpipe. Pre facelift meets Euro 2 emissions norm, Post facelift meets Euro 3, mine now has Euro 3 in its papers even thout being pre a 2002.

You can also run HJS 200 cell cats without getting error codes on a stock tune. But you have to reroute the post cat 02 sensors. US stock goes over the engine an then down to the headers. EU stock is routed straight down from the ECU box down and backward on the driver's side. You can use your stock US sensor hardware. The cables are actually longer than the EU hardware.

These magnaflows look really similar to the HJS cats… metallic substrate 200 cpsi and priced about the same, but ready to install on OEM section one. Can’t find a single review on them though.

This price seems to represent the high end. A little more looking shows them priced less at other websites

With metallic cats it's also about the rare metal content (gold, platinum) . Rare metals are crucial for the catalytic reaction.
HJS uses about 24g per square inch. Magna flow usually comes out at 8 to 10g per square inch.

I can't tell you whether you meet emissions or not with these as I have not used them nor do I plan to, but they are not going to filter as well as HJS. They will probably also not flow as well as HJS.
