    Single mass flywheel discussion…?

So I’m about to buy a new clutch and flywheel kit to finish off my engine rebuild. I see the JB racing kit has a video on youtube and its way way way too loud for my liking. I already have a smf on my other vehicle so I understand NVH is inevitable.

Does anyone have experience with either the ACT BM4-HDSS kit or the Turner Motorsports N54 flywheel conversion?

Dual mass FW was used for a good reason, but if you wanted single mass FW then a softed clutch disk with springs is a must.

I like the jbr kit with steel flywheel and sprung clutch that rogue sells, not loud at all and drivability is good. Avoid aluminium.

I saw a video on YouTube and it seemed really loud, my friend also said his was loud too, unfortunately he doesn’t have to car anymore. I find it strange that some applications of the same flywheel have louder outputs, any reason that might be?

I definitely intend on buying a sprung hub clutch. I’m almost certain my Dual mass was wearing out and had some excessive “ratcheting” motion. I’m also pretty sure that was the source of my springy lurching feeling in low gears if I didn’t engage the clutch smooth enough. It definitely felt like drivetrain lash, but all my other bushings/failure points were good.

We all have different tolerances for noise but I do not find the transmission’s noise more annoying than any of the car’s other mechanical noise. I personally wouldn’t call it loud at all.

The youtube video might be of the aluminium version?

I just did a quick search again, but I can only find listings for the aluminum version of the jb racing flywheel.
Do you have a link to the steel one?

I've just done a manual conversion and decided to go crazy and do a SMF with a sprung clutch. I just got the kit from ECS with the JB flywheel. I reckon it was about half the weight of the OEM DMF. There is some chatter and noise so I wouldn't recommend this for a daily. I'll try Redlines rattle fix oil soon and see how that changes things.

                Regards

I finished my engine build a few months back - using the JB Racing Lightweight Aluminium flywheel paired with a Clutch Masters FX100 sprung-hub clutch.

It chatters at idle - not overly loud but definitely noticeable.

IMHO the performance benefits hugely outweigh the noise.

Mine's a weekend warrior so it doesn't bother me at all.

Mine would definitely only be driven once every blue moon, I just really dont want something loud. Right now I’m thinking about the ACT kit with their streetlite flywheel. Seems like I haven’t been able to find any evidence of them making excessive noise

It will chatter somewhat at idle and also the engine itself revving to redline will be louder, especially around 5k rpm where there is a resonance. This is with the JB racing flywheel.

The chatter really isn't that loud. "Loud" is relative of course, and everyone's definition of loud is different.

I honestly don't mind the noise, and when you think about it, it's really only audible in neutral with the clutch out.

FWIW any single-mass flywheel installed on our car will chatter. You can limit the noise, but no eliminate it with an SMF.

An OEM mass cast iron smf will be the quietest

Be careful with this resonance, this is what rattles the engines apart. My last S54 rattled out a #6 rod bolt. Prior S50/S52 rattled out oil pump nuts, oil pump bolts, pressure plate bolts... Current setup I use a steel JB Racing ( http://www.jbracing.com/flywheel-bmwGA.php ), it was the homologated Grand-Am version and uses E36 M3 pressure plates. I use a Clutch Masters sprung disc with this setup and the e36 328i clutch slave cylinder.
It is heavy, but I honestly can't tell a difference from my old 12 lb flywheel. Some engines play nice with light weight flywheels, others do not.
