    GM5 or Door Lock Actuator?

    Good evening.

The passenger side door lock on my 2003 will not unlock with the key remote or the console switch. It will lock with the key remote, but not with the console switch.

Any tips on determining whether I need a GM5 repair or a door lock actuator?

    Thanks.

I would try a new switch first. Chances are the key could very well be broken too. If it locks with the key you have power and ground and a motor that is able to lock.

1st guess of mine would be switch and key. If not then module most likely

Is it necessary for the console switch to be in good working order for the key remote to lock and unlock the doors?

I've noticed if the battery is poor my drivers door struggles on occasion. Also, the relays on the GM5 module are prone to go bad over time. I replaced mine, but you need to be good with a soldering iron to do a good repair. There are youtube videos on how to do this.

          Regards

It sounds like there may be an issue with the passenger side door lock on your 2003 vehicle. Here are a few things you can try to determine whether the problem is with the GM5 module or the door lock actuator:
            1. Check the wiring and connections to the GM5 module and the door lock actuator. Make sure that all of the wiring is secure and that there are no frayed or damaged wires.
            2. Try to manually unlock the door. If the door can be unlocked manually, then the problem is likely with the door lock actuator.
            3. Try to lock the door manually. If the door can be locked manually but not with the key remote or the console switch, then the problem is likely with the GM5 module.
            4. Try to lock and unlock the driver side door, if it works properly it could mean that the problem is in the passenger door lock actuator.
            5. If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it may be best to consult a professional mechanic or an auto electrician, they can diagnose the problem and recommend the appropriate repair.

It's important to note that a GM5 module repair or a door lock actuator replacement can be labor-intensive and costly, so it's best to have a professional diagnosis from locksmith se22 to ensure that you're getting the right repair for your vehicle.

The door lock relays in the GM5 tend to go bad. That might be a good place to start as both original door lock relays will have to be replaced eventually. Mine had what you described but on the driver's side and it got worse in cold weather.

Since its free and easy, try reformatting your key first. My locks were all over the place and after i replaced my key and set it to my car, it all works perfect.

                just a thought

if this is consistent then can we blame the console switch/wiring?

I just went through this on my touring. Only the driver’s door would open and only if you used the key. The other doors would not unlock even when pulling the handle inside. I tried the center switch first but it ended up being the GM5 module. Removing it without being able to open the passenger door is no fun because the glovebox has to come out to get to it.

I ordered a spare module off eBay for $30 shipped and swapped it in. The doors instantly unlocked. After I coded it with NCS expert everything works as expected, including my key but I did have to resynch it for the remote to work.

The relays in the GM5 module are what fail. You can remove the module and send it in or pick up another one but it must be coded for the car to work properly.

In my case, I’m keeping the spare module as the primary because it’s newer and has more coding features available but most people seem to stick with the original module.

                      Thanks.

Mine started working correctly shortly after I made the OP. I imagine that sooner or later it will give up on me, and I will just go ahead and get the relays in the GM5 replaced.
