    S54 Engine Stand

    Hey guys,

For those of you that have put an S54 on a stand, could you recommend a reasonable quality stand? The market of engine stands is huge with wildly different price points, and I'm really just looking for a stand that will hold a long block for a few months without failing.

    Thanks!

I would recommend harbor freight if you want something decent on a budget

I was just looking at them and the reviews aren't stellar, stating that the stands are bending at considerably less than their rated weight limits. I was looking at this, since it has reasonable reviews: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-918014

I used the harbor freight stand for my rebuild and had zero issues. I’d say it’s perfectly fine unless you plan on keeping an engine on it over a year. Or a lot of use.
Even over a 4 month period of constant load mine held perfectly fine.

Been using the HF stand for years with no issues. Currently have a short block stored on one.

Thanks, guys! Did you get the 1000 or 2000 lb version?

1000lb. One other note; the bottom length is adjustable and can be set where the stand fits nicely between the legs of the HF hoist. This makes transferring from hoist to stand and back pretty easy.

The original engine from my car has been hanging from a harbor freight hoist in the garage for the past six years. Unless for professional use, I don't think you need more.

I see a lot of shops with HF stands.

The only downside to the stand is rotating the engine. It’s sketchy. I use the hoist to make sure the stand doesn’t tip over.

Was just about to post this. It works fine but is not as stable as I’d like without a front T.

HF has somehow brilliantly managed to position themselves as a decent brand amongst the minds of people whereas in reality there is quite possibly nothing more shittily made.

Ted, otc has some affordable options.

Half of the stuff is the same thing that other stores sell.

It should always be said…tread carefully with Harbor Freight.

Hf is fine even w the engine fully built. If your going to build lots of engines maybe spend extra $$$ on a fancy one....

Thanks for the recommendation! These seem to be a little out of my price range, given I only want to use this thing once. I agree that HF quality isn't great, but I think a lot of people who consider it to be a decent brand fail to see that they're in-fact a budget brand for tools that are going to be used once, maybe twice.

I've noticed that a lot of the same tools are carried by the standard auto part stores, heh. There are definite dos and don't to HF. For example, their jack stands are a definite nope, but their hydraulic jacks are fine.

I'm getting an M3 drivetrain for my Touring and I need to store the engine while I restore everything in preparation for the swap. I don't think I'll ever use it again, lol.

Just built my m54b30 on a HF stand. It's fine. you don't need a silver plated engine stand to get the job done.
