I was finishing up torquing my oil pan bolts after the rod bearing job and the very last bolt stripped the female threads. Pulled the bolt out and there was metal shavings wrapped half way up the bolt. It's the crankshaft seal threads that you have to bolt using the access hole so it's hard to see how bad the damage is. What do you think my best course of action should be? Should I just tap it to 1/4-28 or should I try to install a M6 insert in there?

Did it go in super tight from the beginning or did it strip on final tightening. If the first then the threads are gojjanbe toast. Retap bigger or insert. If it bottomed out then stripped you might get away with cleaning the threads, using a new bolt and a little bit of loctite

I overtorqued 1 bolt when I had my pan off to do my rod bearings. Retapped with the same size/pitch and managed to retorque roughly to spec and it never leaked. Granted this was one of the many bolts along the long side of the pan. Personally I'd give the same size tap a go and see how tight you get it. If it still isn't good then you could try an insert?
