Material in oil filter after rebuild

I am about 8,000km in since rebuilding my engine. I am still getting the odd small fleck of metal in the filter. The motor was rebuilt completely top to bottom. New rings/hone, rebuilt head etc. I took a photo of the filter that I took out most recently (about 1000km on it). There were 4 or 5 small flecks in the whole filter as shown below.

What amount of material is normal for these engines? I would assume none, especially after a rebuild. I did notice peering through the oil filler cap that there seems to be some unusual wear on one of the cam lobes. These are original and were not replaced in the rebuild. Again, is this normal? Could it be the cause of the occasional material in the filter? Worth removing the cam cover to take a closer look?

I would expect a piece of dirt here and there unless you built it in a clean room.

I've seen that type of cam wear before, it doesn't seem to be a problem long-term.

FWIW OP, I rebuilt my motor and got it running about 6 months ago. Have since covered ~4,000km and many oil changes.

Most recent oil change had ~1,000km on it. I opened up the oil filter and saw a few non-ferrous metallic particles just like yours.

With each successive oil change, metal particles seem to be decreasing.

I had a local machine shop clean/flush/etc. the block & head. It's anyone's guess how well they cleaned everything; especially the oil galleys in the block. On this note, I pressure cleaned the oil galleys in the crank, and a lot of shit came out. Likely the machine shop didn't clean all components correctly!

Mind you, I did rebuild mine due to a spun bearing. There was a lot of metal inside my motor when I opened it up

i been frantically checking the filter inbetween my 1000km oil changes

I had 6 thou shaved off the head
Even though i cleaned the head best i could, i still see the odd fleck showing up in the filter

Keen to drop the sump again and check the new ACL RBs are holding up, i really wanted to go with BMW shells

interested to know your thoughts, I've yet to see any negative reports on the ACL outside of people complaining on the finish…that they clearly mention on their website

I've seen this when the block is baked and washed at the machine shop. It's critical that you pull the pressed in oil gallery plugs (there are 4 of them, 2 at each end) before dropping the block off at the machine shop. After you get the block back, you need to scrub out all the oil passages with a bore brush to get all of the baked off oil and soot. Same needs to be done for the oil passages on the crank. I usually hit the block passages with a pressure washer, then follow up with a bore brush soaked in atf. About 6-8 passes with the brush gets the job done. Follow up with brake cleaner, then some motor oil to keep things from rusting.
Same goes for the freshly machined bores. I use atf and it's not uncommon to have to wipe each bore down about a dozen times before your shop towel comes out with zero dirt on it.
At this point I wouldn't worry about it. It generally takes 2-3 oil changes before you have zero debris in your oil after a rebuild.

Good to know man, Just going the non genuine route can have it's draw backs thats all
I like to keep a check over my work after the job is complete to see everything is OK, so this is tough a 1 for me
