    VANOS Solenoid Issue?

I was at COTA this past weekend, car was running well. I did drive over the curbs in…almost every corner. Have to keep this GT3RS’s off my ass!

Looking for input…need a quick turn around since I have an event next week.

Sun afternoon, lost power while I was going over the curb at the exit of 1 and 12. Got codes P1637, P0010, P0012, and P0013. First time I’ve ever had these codes, never had a VANOS issue.

Pulled the valve cover and checked the pump disc, chain tensioner and cams…all good to go. I thought I had done the Besian coil pack when I did the whole VANOS fix. It may have been on the engine I sold.

I’m guessing it’s the solenoid. Besian solenoid pack on order. Also going to do both of the TPS.

Am I on track? Anything I’m missing?

You are on the right track. Same codes popped for me and I replaced the vanos solenoid and good to go.

Did you get a P1637 at the same time?

        I only got the ...0010, 0011, 0012s

I've heard the besian rebuilt solenoids don't always work properly. I used one, but I'm still having what I'm guessing is a vanos issue (pulling back at about 5500 rpm), though no codes, but I might try to swap.

Didn't, but the P1367 and all the rest are definitely vanos/camshaft related and the easiest, and potentially cheapest, place to start is the solenoid.

It seems you bounced the car too hard and electrical components were falling apart
1637: should check the TPS near the oil filter
Other codes seems to be the solenoid plate.

Was the problem solenoid a Besian unit? If so start there and hope you dont get another dud. I went through 10 of them before I cut my losses and bought a new one from the dealer. The problem with the Besian service is that the reliability of the pack is based on what condition it arrived to Rajie in. A lot of people send theirs in when it fails and there are 3 or 4 failure points. He addresses 3 of them and the 4th is an unknown condition. At one point he sent me like 3 units to test back to back and they all had different outcomes from misfires, starting issues, etc. Last one worked but had an intermittent starting issue that took me a year to find. Not one of the units threw codes either.

Outside of that, have nothing but great things to say about Rajie. Absolute standup dude that has done wonders for this community and will make it right every time in my experience. The solenoid issues though are real. Have verified similar outcomes with multiple shops I have talked with over the years.

Honestly if you can find someone local to test their solenoid and it fixes the issue I would just order a new reman from BMW and put the issue to bed so your event doesnt get ruined if you get a dud.

That's a good point Corey, I might throw my good one from my other car on to do some diagnostics. I was thinking I might ask Rajae for a swap as I'm still experiencing some hiccups even though I've replaced every sensor/plug/coil/etc.

I just installed the new Besian solenoid. The car is loud and not street legal so it’s only been idling but so far, so good. Not it idles normally, P00XX codes did not come back.

I have an EML but no SES light. I think the EML light will go away once I’m able to drive it around the block.

This is the frustration with a track or racecar…can’t go fully test it until I haul the car back to the track. But I feel good about this. Better than trying to hunt down a vibration that only happens at 120+ mph.

Interesting, so where did you hear there is a 4th issue it doesn't address? And what code does this 4th issue throw if I may ask?
Also, I'm not sure I understand if there is a 4th condition that is "unknown" how did they know it was fixed?
Lastly if you buy a "new reman from BMW" then they must know what this issue is or wouldn't that also not fix it being a reman and not new? Thank you.

Hiya bigjae, it's kinda funny because I bought a takeoff unit from you years ago when I had an issue.
It sometimes took as little as one key off/ start to trigger some codes for my P0011 and some longer drive cycles for a P0013, P0015 over the years dealing with vanos.

New solenoid pack, both TPS and gas pedal...running normally.

P1637 disappeared without doing anything with the TPS?

OK, so the solenoid plate, 2 TPS and one pedal sensor were replaced. It is a little hard to think all 3 individual parts damaged by coincident.
