Found this rare E46 M3 Vorsteiner carbon roof on the internet that seems interesting and wanted to share. Note that the underside looks like fabric. Is that the biaxial fabric you speak of?

Hard to tell from the pic. Looks like some sort of chop strand veil.

That is odd. When I make my roofs I use a biaxial fabric under the exterior layer which takes care of any voids since the tows are 45 degrees from the outer layer. Then I use a thicker layer on the bottom.

Which brand roof is this? Aren't these roofs supposed to be made from multiple layers to give it the strength that is required for a structural component?

I have seen light shining through the weave on non structural parts such as a CSL diffuser.

Are see-through pinholes in carbon roofs or any carbon part expected?

Photos below are exterior shots with a flashlight inside pointed up at my carbon roof. I think nobody notices it because when it comes out of the shop, the headliner is installed.



I also see it on Vorsteiner bumpers:

Is that the inside or outside?

If inside then it might be a polyester core material peeling through. Not really an issue if it is on the inside.

if outside, some pinholes in an unfinished part is normal. Clear coating should fill in the pinholes. The part needs tk be sanded before spraying so the white dots could be dust stuck under the clear coat.

Jae, ive got a slick top headliner lying around that needs recovering… i won't get around to doing a cf roof anytime soon

Seems like the euro headliner is the same, save for that bump in the middle. If you bring that down to follow the contour of the surfaces next to it, it should be the same.

I could make one if samthejam will sell me his slicktop headliner. The bad news is it has to be destroyed to make a dimensionally correct mold...or at least made to weigh 20x heavier. There are other ways to make the mold without destroying the part but I guess it comes down to the time vs money argument. The cost will be in the mold. Materials would be cheap. A non-gel coated fiberglass part shouldn't cost more than $50-$75 in materials.

I purchased a donar e46 m3 because it had the OEM CSL carbon roof on it, Kevin who is the owner of ABS took on the challenge of removing a 15 year appoxyd roof flawlessly without a single crack or chip. Then he prepped it for my LSB CSL car , perfectly removed the windshield and aligned everything to spec. ABS AUTO BODY

You guys are right. I got work done at 2M.

I was lured with their euro headliner saying that they may have one available and if my car was in their shop, I could get it first before others waiting for it. Once my car was transported there, the story changed to how their mold is almost complete and it just kept dragging out since. After 2 months of waiting with no headliner, I just wanted my car back and then I posted my observations in my initial post. David was very pleasant to work with throughout the process and there was no way I thought anything could go wrong with all the carbon conversions they may have performed. I did have to press him a little to start working on my car and either he was very passive because he was very agreeable or I was just a fool. Likely, the latter.

Sounds about right. I didn't have this issue when they did my E46 but I did have an issue earlier this year where David @ 2M took almost an ENTIRE FUCKING MONTH to respray the hood and fender on my M2. Nothing but excuses and bullshit, and there were a bunch of things he didn't do that he said he would.

I cannot recommend 2M Autowerks anymore, sorry that you got tricked and BS'd.

Did you think about printing one in a few smaller pieces? I feel like if you could make it slip fit and use some sort of filler to smooth out the gaps, that might work for a piece like this.

That would probably work, but it would also probably weigh 10x as much as the stock one.
