Should this be okay to fit back on with the damage shown. I assume I can just file it down slightly?
Two sealing surfaces could leak: the top to the VC gasket, the rear to the metal gasket. Make sure the marred up material do not protrude higher than the sealing surface as it they do, then the interference create a gap between the vanos and the VC and to the head. So file them down if they are higher than the rest of the sealing surface.
Don't use any metal tool to pry the vanos off the head, but use a piece of wood and hammer to tap it off slowly.

fortunately I know not to use metal but the previous owner of this vanos possibly didn't, who knows as I bought it second hand.
