CF roof and slick-tops - what do you do for an antenna?

Do you just have the bodyshop install a new shark fin or something else?

My first m3 didn’t have a shark fin. I’m not actually sure what it’s for but I don’t think you need it if you just want to have an am/fm antenna.

You delete it. It’s just for BMW assist which is deactivated on these cars anyway.

If you really wanted to keep it just for aesthetics, it's just held on by double sticky tape.

There's no hole cut out in the roof like on the newer BMWs.

The BMW assist shark fin on the E46 literally just sits on the roof with double sticky tape and the wire for it gets tucked over the edge of the roof underneath the rain channel of the rear windshield gasket and goes across to the driver side and down the driver side part of the windshield through another hole in the trunk channel.

Otherwise just delete it. It doesn't serve any purpose anymore.

I asked because I've always wanted to dona sunroof delete with a CF roof but assumed that was the radio antenna. Guy that worked onnmy car also said that gasket is cracking and needs replaces but to get to it, you had to go through the headliner.

the stock radio antenna is located inside the driver side C pillar, unaffected by any roof work

No not with the Shark Fin. On the early E46 323/328 and tourings that had the “bee stinger” it has a hole in roof. Those need access to it by dropping headliner.

The antenna is in the rear window glass on a coupe. The module in the c pillar is the amplifier.

Yep! Antenna is on the rear glass.
The “antenna module/amp” is located at the left C pillar.

BMW assist - crap to make BMW more money that they make the customers pay for by convincing them it's an add on. Just like maintenance plans.

a little OT but most maintenance plans i've seen add up to be a cheaper option than paying the dealer directly every time you need it

Customers can do everything we do minus an oil change and a break flush typically. My view is in conflict with how I make money but I wouldn't sacrifice values for money. Taking 20 minutes to minor items like wipers and filters could save someone hundreds, if not thousands. I'm not a fan of how maintenance works at the dealer, however, it puts food on the table. Thankfully, this forum provides an avenue for my customer base to do it themselves. I will always be an advocate of that if the individuals ability is there. A vast majority of people are smart enough to do most maintenance and repairs to their vehicle if only they ask for the information. Many technicians don't share my views for obvious reasons, but I never want to be what stands in the way of someone genuinely saving money to do something right. There is a loyalty to Honda or Subaru simply because the manufacturer still provides and avenue for customers to take care of their own vehicle. It maintains loyalty when a company set aside the desire for $$$ and think of how to better serve people. I'm a small minority in the dealer world but we exist.
