Is it necessary? Probably not but I makes me feel better.

I haven't seen a BMW without copper dust in the oil filter housing yet. I've done a lot of BMW oil changes and have seen knocking Porsches with less copper in the oil.

Is there clarity about the proper way to disable the fuel system?

Do I need to go into the glove box to pull the relay or is there an easier way.

IIRC fuel pump fuse is # 54 or thereabouts.

If you did some "serious" engine work you'll want to crank for a lot more than 3 x 10 seconds... I crank it until the oil pressure light goes away.

F54 is the fuel pump fuse as Kaiv stated.

Note that a properly working fuel system will retain pressure for awhile and if you just pull the fuel pump fuse without bleeding off the pressure it will likely momentarily fire up. So you can pull the fuse with it running and let it stall out, crack a fuel line open or disconnect the coils.

^ This. If I know that I am going to be working on the engine ahead of time (fuel filter, fuel injectors, compression test and such), I will get home after a drive (day of or day before) and shut the engine off as it is at operating temp. Then I will pull the fuel pump fuse, restart the engine and let the engine stall out. With the engine already at operating temp, the fuel will burn and evaporate quickly. It is not a huge issue if this is done on a cold engine, but I'd rather avoid the cold start and dumping excess fuel into the cylinders and washing away some oil.
