    Vanos Repair Price

Hey everyone. Just got a price quote for a Vanos rebuild plus valve job and wanted to see if it sounds about right? Parts and labor came to $1818. I’m in the Chicago land area.

That seems high, but it's 2022 so probably appropriate in their minds. Would make more sense if that price included a new hub at $700 or something. Is that just like a couple hundred in parts? (gaskets, besian stuff?)

Vanos refurb, if not buying a new hub, even including valve adjustment, which is mostly labor, should be less than $1k imo.

A few hundred for labor of valve adjustment. Similar labor charge for vanos R&R. $260 for solenoid & orings. I wouldn't bother with anti rattle stuff. Some new intake cam gear socket cap bolts should be cheap. Forgot the cost of the redrilled disc and chain guide, but I still think everything should come to about $1k.

It’s $530 in Besian parts. $350 in Misc parts that includes valve cover gasket and then labor was $780 for the Vanos plus $130 for the valve adjustment. I thought it was going to be less than $1800.

Heh. I didn't install the anti-rattle kit when I rebuild the VANOS on my 120k mile car due to a cracked exhaust tab. I had never heard the VANOS rattle before, so I figured it wasn't necessary. However, after I replaced the o-rings, the VANOS rattled like crazy between 2k - 2.5k RPMs. I'm guessing the new o-rings improved the functionality of the VANOS to the point where it could rattle.

A few months later, I installed the anti-rattle kit (and double checked the torque on the cam gear bolts... I was paranoid!). It quieted down the rattle quite a bit, but the rattle is still noticeable if you listen for it.

Some shops like to make money on parts. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Those prices may or may not be reasonable, depending on what's included. If you have an actual parts breakdown, you can easily check to see what the Beisan and miscellaneous parts should actually cost and then decide if the shop markup is worth it. Given that VANOS and valve adjustments involve lots of fiddly bits, you definitely don't want the shop to rush through the job...

Car maintenance makes an excellent hobby!

seems totally reasonable to me. again, depends on what parts you're doing and all that. 4 years ago i did the Beisan anti-rattle kit, solenoid control packs, pressure valves, gaskets, shims, seals, plugs, spring kit, and engine temp sensor for $2600.

It rattling only if there is too much plays in the piston shaft bearing, which can be checked: With the vanos module removed, stand in front of the car and grab the bearing shaft and do a quick push/pull to feel any detectable plays. If less than 0.001" then should not rattle.

Seems about right to me. Those are very specific jobs that require care. I’d rather pay up for a known quantity than shop for the lowest rate.

Just wanted to be sure I wasn't getting ripped off. Have seen many older posts with much lower prices. Has to be the crazy times we live in.

That price seems right for what you describe.

This seems right or within the variance of standard good labor in any time period to me. Shops have always charged a ‘corkage’ fee for parts. And there’s no way around the amount of time it takes to do that stuff accurately and well.

As long as they do it well I’d have no qualms paying that. If I had to buy the shims and tools and vanos stuff I’d be hard pressed to do it for half that… doing it myself!

Just curious, what shop did you get that estimate from? Thanks!

great thread. I have to get my vanos done this year and was wondering if anyone has a good shop in Orlando FL they recommend?

I paid about the same in Los Angeles earlier this year. I believe that’s a normal price.
