When they told me they would replace the whole adjustment unit and not do any sort of rebuild I wasn't exactly surprised, just disappointed as I want wanted to "bulletproof" mine and not replace with the same component(s) that may fail.

Vanos repair vs. "bulletproofing" are two separate things but it is frustrating to not find a shop willing do a "bulletproof" job in your area if you are not able to do it yourself.
IMO a complete replacement is better than a rebuild, the ONLY reason a rebuild is better is if it incorporates a drilled disc OR an aftermarket hub with larger tabs is installed. Most profitable shops are businesses first and even though WE know the data says a drilled disc/oversized pump tabs are the correct repair following BMW repair procedures is the best way to limit their liability while maintaining profits.

I agree that it is unfortunate that you don't have a shop that caters to a niche group like ours but maybe you'll just have to make the drive to a major city for the work you need done or as you mentioned DIY it yourself. Follow the Beisan Systems instructions to the T and ask questions if you aren't sure, I bet you'll be fine.

It was a blessing I couldn't find a shop to do it actually as it made me start working on my vehicle more than things like belts/suspension/exhaust etc.

First time I opened a valve cover was on my M3 when doing the vanos/valve adj., there were zero issues, just wanted it "bulletproofed".

I manged to clutter the forum w/ probably 4 different threads during that time and couldn't have done it without the folks on here, but it made me more comfortable with other work going forward.

Now I'm looking to fully rebuild an N54..that should be interesting, especially without all the help on here.
