Factory ''cosmoline''. All E46 M3 have this. I like to strip it from plastic underside covers and alu bellypan even if only my alignment guy will ever see it...
So if you look at the underside of that car, all that yellow-ish grimey looking gunk around the fuel lines and fuel tank. Is that some kind of sealer that they put on certain cars? Dealers in the midwest or rust belt put that on?

I'm on a phone but that might be rustproofing. Funny thing is that was my first job as a teenager back in the 80's. I don't know if it was still as prevalent in the '00s. We'd pick up the cars at the dealer, take them to the shop and rustproof them, then take them back to the dealer. I don't recall seeing any on my '05 car.
