    Vanos confusion

Hi all, new owner here. I recently purchased an 03 convertible with smg and 64k miles. I've been furiously learning about these wonderful machines. I have short and long term plans in mind for just about everything. However, I'm confused by the vanos. I have no codes and no apparent abnormal noises.

There seems to be general consensus that something should be done to the vanos, but little consensus as to what. There are a few things that come up regularly, but I would like the groups suggestions on what should be done to a newly squired vanos with no current problems.

I will be doing valve adjustments in the next 1 or 2 weeks, so this would be the first opportunity to address the vanos.

    Thanks!

Do a Vanos test with ISTA/Tools32 and a pressure test, if all ok. Look elsewhere and leave it alone

Thanks, maupineda. I'll have to figure out the software.

I also just found this very helpful thread:

First post suggests intake sprocket sleeve bolts and oil pump disk should be considered on otherwise functional vanos.

During valve adjustment inspect vanos exhaust hub tabs.

But the real issue is cam bolts backing out. Best course of action is to budget at least for timing chain guide, cam bolts, and exhaust tab since those failures can grenade your engine. The rest can be done later if needed. But its best to do conplete overhaul all at once while VANOS is off.

As others had pointed out, here are the items I would do to prevent "engine damaged":
          1. Loctite all the cam sleeve bolts. This means the vanos hubs must be removed for the job, then vanos must be re-timed.
          2. check and replace the upper right chain guide
          3. To avoid EX hub tabs breaking, remove and have the vanos pump disk drilled 2 new smaller holes for the tabs, for less free plays. I suggest to keep the original disk.
