Yeah aluminum does not like simple green. Maybe an aluminum polish can help, but I would probably just leave them alone. Don't want to mess up the bearing surfaces.

The cam bearing surfaces aren't exactly smooth. When I removed my stock 60k mile cams, both the cam caps and bottom surfaces were very rough (i.e. you're finger nail would catch in them). They're machined from factory of course, but they're not smooth like bottom-end journals. Have seen the same on multiple s54's. Cam journal carriers don't need to be smooth.
