    Trouble taking off cams

    Hey Guys,

So this engine is annoying me now.

I've taken off the vanos and everything the cams are attached to in the front. I've taken off all camshaft caps and left cyl 3 (the decompressed one). If quarter turned and taken of the last cap, and tge cam is still firmly in place... and won't budge. Am I missing something? It looks like tge cam is just lying across the engine, but can't be picked up.

What can be holding this thing in place???

It’s just bound up. Take your 24mm and wiggle the cam back and forth (with the #3 cap still attached) as you loosen the nuts.

Ok, I'm on it. I have a feeling I'm in for a heavyweight bout

Is it still seated even with the engaged valves pushing on it? You also removed the very front cam cap? The double one that spans across both cams? From photos and memory there are 6 single cam caps and a final double cam cap just next to the chain.

        Regards

Yeah, I removed the double cap on the front, and all associated caps (and vanos components).

Yes, even with the valve compressed, it stayed there with everything removed. Im fighting with both cams now, to put the caps and screws back on. Im going to torque everything back down and try again.

Everyone is saying its bound up... tried wiggling the cam, but it wasn't budging.

Post a photo because it is not making sense what you are saying. If the caps are off, there is no way the cam is binding (I don't even think that makes sense). If it is, you may have let it move too much when dissasembling and now it's jammed somehow without cracking.

It is impossible to have the valve springs compressed with all the cam bearing caps removed. You're lucky if the cams have not cracked.

Thats exactly what happened. They were both jammed and weren't moving. I guess I was extremely lucky.

                  Thanks everyone, for the feedback.
You were right, both cams were jammed when loosening the final cap. I needed to reinstall all caps, torn down, and start again. After this, both cams came off perfectly.

                  Thanks again!!!

OK, so not all caps were removed and this is the reason why the cams were not free to be removed. From the first post I thought all caps were already removed: "If quarter turned and taken of the last cap, and tge cam is still firmly in place."

No all caps were removed. I think it was just bound on the edges of the journals (as in spring was wedging the cam to the side of the journals).

It is amazing that the cam under very strong compressed valve spring that didn't pop out of the half moon bearings. Do you have a pic to share the magic moment?

I removed cams out of my blown engines and had to pry the cams out without and caps on. They didn't break but man were they in there. Obviously prying is bad but I was missing a piston so they were trash. Same thing happened to me though.

Same thing happened to me I didn't want to put the caps back on so can remember using 2 prybars to pop out cams.
