    Valeo Starter issue

    Hey guys,

Replaced the starter 2 years ago with a brand new Valeo from FCP. Has anyone ever seen this happen or can explain what would cause this? Nothing was loose when I removed it. This did burn up the insulation on one of the wires, so I’ll have to retape it.

It looks like the nut holding the batt and the alternator cables was not tight enough, so during engine running there was some voltage drop due to high current (charging + headlights) and it caused heat. The damage has nothing to d0 with the function of the starter, but it's just the connection for high current load during driving.
Which cable with damaged insulation -- alternator or the one connected to the fender jumper post?

BTW, what did cause you to look at the starter? Having low batt issue or burning smell? I think if you had checked the batt voltage then it should show less than 14v with engine running.

Was initially having intermittent issues starting. I ruled out the starter from the jump because I replaced it not long ago. I replaced the battery in the Spring and it was manufactured last year, so I did rule the battery out for a bit. Battery wasn't staying charged and I thought that there was a drain issue. Took the battery in to get tested and it was a bad battery. But it still didn't make sense cause I couldn't jumpstart. So initially I was going to just remove the intake manifold and test the terminals, but saw the issue right away. Damaged cable was to the alternator

This proves it -- not tight connection. Lucky for you as this is not far from the fuel hose (for non-M cars but I'm 100% on M cars).

            Poor connection.
