    Super Sprint /karbonius

    Hi guys,

I posted a ways back on this but didn't end up buying then. I have an 02 M3 vert in great condition. Just got a respray done of front bumper and am having a shop do paint correction and ceramic coating in a few weeks. Have 19 inch competition wheels, some CSL style under spoilers but otherwise stock. Looking to do some fun performance mods

Have done a lot of reading, here and elsewhere and am thinking of the following:

    Supersprint 63.5mm headers
    Supersprint 63.5mm Catted section 1
Supersprint Resonated twin pipe section 2
Supersprint Performance Muffler (787506 part number) - believe this is referred to as street muffler here
Karbonius Airbox (race or non race) - doesn't seem like theres much benefit to one over the other?

Planned to use Kassel for tuning/mapping.

    Couple questions
This seems to be a somewhat popular setup? Anyone done similar and have audio clips from in the car? Really hard to find online! Every clip seems to be of Supersprint race. If anyone is in NY area with a similar setup and would be willing to let me hear that would be awesome!

Seems like emissions may or may not be an issue? Hearing conflicting takes here.

Any other thoughts on build would be welcome. I'm not looking to eek out every possible inch of power here, just looking to have some fun, improve sound and not have it smell terrible.

That exhaust setup should be pretty quiet according to Obioban. My car has a stock US exhaust, Karb standard airbox, Karb snorkel, and Karb foam filter. If you want, I can try to get videos of the intake with windows open and closed tomorrow, but IMO you need to hear it in person.

I ordered a Karb Race airbox for my other car. The price difference between it and the standard version on ECS is/was under $100 (Race more expensive), but you don’t need to buy a separate snorkel that’ll cost you $450-600 depending on if you go with OE or Karb.

Don't bother with the SS Street, it's almost exactly the same as stock and only weighs 5 lbs less. I would go with SS Sport or the new RE El Diablo Caliente.

The Race integrates the snorkel into the design. The internals are the same. It was developed by Karbonius for track cars that run a different bumper than CSL and its duct.

Are you doing the HP DME conversion and loading their tune onto it - or going there for a dyno session?

I would skip the Street muffler and go for the Sport. I have had both exact setup with the alternative rear section. I'll get some sound clips later in April.

I also have it paired with a CSL airbox. You'll still hear the airbox very loud and clear with the Sport setup.

How do you guys stuff? The 100 CPSI cats will trigger a CEL.

Thanks for the responses! Any videos from in the car would be much appreciated!

Is there any opinion on the karbonius with or without the snorkel then? The race still works with standard bumper?

The sport is their gen 2 muffler correct (043926)? How loud is this compared to stock and is there any drone?

I plan on doing the HP/DME conversion and loading the Kassel tune on that. Don't plan to do a dyno session unless necessary.

I didn't realize this setup would trigger a CEL. Had read that there may be an issue with readiness.

This is pretty much my exact setup (OEM airbox on my car, but they sound the same).

There's no real way to make an exhaust sound video with it, because you just can't hear it over the airbox.

Which, is exactly what I want-- IMO every s54 exhaust setup sounds terrible. Whereas, the intake sounds like a McLaren F1. Minimize the bad, maximize the good.

Never had any emissions issues. It doesn't stink-- that would 100% be a deal breaker for me. Best setup for the car, for my wants.

If you feel like driving to PA, you can hear it in person

Is there any opinion on the karbonius with or without the snorkel then?

Yes, their CSL Style is the OEM replica. Their carbon snorkel is optional.

The race still works with standard bumper?

              Yes.

              Yes.

How loud is this compared to stock and is there any drone?

I don't have decibel output precisely. It's louder, has a deeper tone, no rasp, drone - mmm, not to my ears.

I plan on doing the HP/DME conversion and loading the Kassel tune on that. Don't plan to do a dyno session unless necessary.

The cats are moved downstream on US cars, CEL will happen. Kassel can adjust the tune to compensate.

I would highly recommend a tune that optimizes for the airbox and the Supersprint 63.5mm piping. You'll otherwise run a bit rich and not make the power you could!

You're getting old man The Street was mild as hell! The Sport sounds mean, it's no V8 nor V10 though.

The Race airbox works better for the stock bumper as there is no ram air to duct from the standard front bumper. The CSL bumper, on the other hand, can utilize the ram air for the snorkel piece.

Stick to the street muffler if you want to reduce drone with the full SS setup. The S54 drones between 2.5k and 3k RPM and you'll really notice it if you have a lot of uphill grades in your area.

Sounds mean, but also sounds like a Civic and drones (not limited to the sport-- all e46 M3 mufflers that are loud sound like a civic and drone).

My e60 is loud-- and is loud without droning, and sounds good. I'm not against loud exhaust, just against the car sounding bad and being annoying. I'd do the muffler delete on the e39, if it wasn't my "wife's" car (she DDs it, so has veto power on mods).

SS V1 with cats and twin sec 2 will make the car sound not great imo. I’ve tried SS Race and SS Sport, and both sound muted. Maybe it’ll sound better/tolerable when combined with the intake. If not, I’ll switch to the Street muffler. The best sounding exhaust setup I ever ran was AP headers, stock midpipes, and SS Race, but after owning a stock E36 M3, I started to appreciate the induction and mechanical noises more.

Arguing about what E46 exhuast setup sounds best is a fool's errand. Go for induction/engine noise (airbox/catless headers [ssv1 are best]), leave the rest stock or stock like.

Esp on a vert. Top down, the airbox alone will be glorious.

Exactly, they all sound varying degrees of terrible from in and outside the cabin. I'll likely end up running a stock sec3 again, but for now I'll experiment with the Sport for a bit

I have the full 63.5mm system w/race muffler on stock intake and I'm happy with it. But, I've only got stock to compare too and not as much experience as others however, many make the point the airbox sound is what you want. I'm not willing to tackle the intake, but if I were, I'd agree with others a SS Sport muffler (or similar) might be better based on what I've seen others say here.
