Transmission popping out of gear - fixed!

My manual transmission started intermittently popping out of gear a couple of years ago. This would only happen in 3rd and only when engine braking and going downhill. If I gave it any gas while going downhill, it would not pop out. Changing transmission fluid and mount did nothing.

I did some forum searches and it sounded like either a synchro going out or a detent spring needing replacement.

A local transmission shop said they can't work on my transmission and recommended replacement.

So I've been just living with it, until now. As I was getting rod bearings done, the shop noticed a small transmission leak coming from the shifter seal.

They replaced these two parts and that solved my issue!
    Shifter Seal
    23 12 7 501 582
    1
    Rod Joint
    25 11 7 580 281
    1

My guess is the rod selector joint had some slop in it and it wasn't always fully going into 3rd gear?

I hope this helps someone else.

I don't see how the new joint can fix gear pop-out issue, as the new part doesn't make the slider gear moves further rearward to the 3rd gear dogteeth, because the shifter can move with a wide range travel and it's stopped only after the slider engaged the dogteeth.

It's been a couple of hundred km's now with no issue, but if it happens again I will update my post not to mislead anyone. Thanks sapote

So to post an update, it's been about 1000km and the issue did occur 3 or 4 times now. So it's not fixed completely but is much less frequent after these parts were replaced. Before, I could trigger it almost every other time I drove when I coasted downhill in 3rd gear

Make sure the rubber shifter boot that goes up the shift lever is not pulled up too high and putting tension on the shift lever while in gear. Ask me how I know this....

The leather shift boot around the shifter? Or somewhere below that?

              Below that.

Number 8 in this diagram. It will be visible if you remove the leather shift boot.
