SMG issue on high rpm shifting

    Hello all,

I developed a slip on the clutch when I shift on 6000 rpm’s and up, it drops 2000 -3000 rpm’s and slips takes like 2 to 3 seconds to grab.
Car is an 04 SMG with 97k miles with CSL TF tune

Any input on the issue would be appreciated.

    Thank you

Have you tried adapting the SMG system with INPA? It trains the ECU where the clutch bite point is.

Thank you, I don’t have access to INPA to reset the adaptations

I would recommend all SMG owners bite the bullet and buy the $20 K+DCAN cable and download INPA (free).

I do have an OBD cable that I ve got with the TFS tune, not sure if it’s the same like the K+DAN .
Can you share a link for the free INPA download.

          Thank you

A quick search for Mike's Easy BMW Tools should get you what you need. There's also a thread on the Bimmerforums Z3 forum

Hi There - You need a bit more info from the system to troubleshoot, i would start at taking a look at hydraulic pressure on the system, check to see if your chf11s fluid was ever replaced. To do this, you will need inpa to take a look at the variables on which the system operates.

Not clear to me it's clutch slipping, and from what gear to what gear -- so vague. If it is then why rpm dropped to 2000 from 6000rpm? If indeed clutch was slipping the rpm should even be higher as the load dropped by slipping clutch. This sounds more like gears couldn't engage so DME must drop rpm to sync the synchro.
I think slave cylinder couldn't dis-engage completely -- slightly dragging clutch issue.

The issue I have is usually from 2nd to 3rd and to 4th gear under high load when I shift the engagement is sluggish and the rpm’s to the higher gear drop 2000 before can go higher if that make sense. It’s not a linear rev up and almost instant like it used to be.

I would say bc the clutch is dragging preventing the synchro to to slow down the input shaft in time, so the Dme needs to lower the rpm.
What’s the mileage on the clutch?
Use inpa to reset the slave travel/biting point.
