    SMG E46 M3 Locked Shifter

    Hey guys,

I'm reaching out to see if anyone can provide insight on a perplexing issue I've run into with my SMG E46 M3.

Background: I accidentally bricked my DME. With the bricked DME still in the car, I was still able to shift in and out of gear, so the SMG seemed to be functioning somewhat normally, even with the bricked DME. The pump was also confirmed to be operational.

Current Issue: I picked up and installed a new DME today, hoping to resolve the initial problem. However, now I'm faced with a new challenge - the shifter is locked and I can't get it to move. (New DME is EWS deleted, if that matters).

    Diagnostics:
    • Connected to INPA to dig deeper:
      • Clutch functionality is normal.
      • SMG pump works as it should. (And has the necessary Bars of pressure)
      • Car can successfully shift into all gears via INPA.
      • All SMG test functions on INPA are showing as passed.
With all the diagnostics showing everything is operational, I can't figure out why the shifter is locked. Has anyone else faced a similar issue or have any insights or suggestions on what might be happening or how to troubleshoot further?

Any advice or shared experiences would be immensely helpful. Thank you all in advance!

Are you applying the brake when trying to move the shifter?

Of course. The break switch is also not bad. When I clear the smg codes the starter will engage ( upon trying to start the car) but once the codes come back the starter will not activate. Could this be an ews error?

Are you sure your new DME is flashed with SMG software?

Yes. And I am sure the current SMG brain is not bricked either, as I was able to communicate to it via winkfp and updated it; even doing that, I still had issues.

What codes are you getting from the SMG ECU before you clear them. Sounds like this guy had similar symptoms but had to replace the pump:

His issue was related to a DME that I loaned to him to try and use and that DME had CAN bus issues.

I fixed his original DME and that works no problem

So I have to investigate the DME with CAN bus issues and see what that is.
