Behind the Price Tag: The Source of Status Gruppe Coilovers

Ever found yourself wondering where Status Gruppe sourced their coilovers before making the switch from Poland to China? I've delved into this and have some info to share!

So, here's the scoop: Initially, these coilovers were purchased for a hefty sum of $400, or €365. And as you know, the kicker – they were sold for a "modest" $900 !

Pics are below, feel free to make your own conclusions, but I've made mine.

Below, is the picture from the supplier.

Quick Google search and came across this and similar statements: "DTS is a german tuning "brand" and their coilovers come from AP which is a sub-brand of KW"

Are these any good? Had to ask for $400.

Is this news? Most vendors markup and resell items. Mishimoto sells an oil thermostat for $120...same one on ebay for $45.

If they're not manufacturing it themselves in house, it's coming from overseas no doubt.

When I use to work for Andy's Auto Sport back in the early 00's, we had made a copy of the super popular "gull-wing" doors, we called them Glide doors. We sourced a Chinese manufacturer to supply all the parts including the shocks. The shocks were so weak they wouldn't support most doors, unless it was a Civic hatchback or similar. We took a lot of heat for those doors, but we sold them for $1200 and it only cost us $200 per kit, we made a killing and the kicker was, to install two shocks on each door if they were too heavy, some clients had installed three shocks. Hindsight, we really screwed the consumer over back then, was a terrible design and the cheap parts were a joke.

OP - mind figuring out who makes their section 3’s? Asking for a friend 😅

The way most asian factories work is, you send them the design, they make you a prototype, you make adjustments, they keep making prototypes until you approve, and then mass manufacturing goes into effect.

So, ever if you found the actual factory producing their section3, you wouldn't be able to get them to sell it to you unless you personally know a Chinese guy at the factory. These are made specifically for Status Gruppe.

AFAIK, Status's section 3 is a design they bought from someone else, and had it made overseas. I've been wrong before though.

This is exactly what was done, sometimes for TM issues you have the change the design by 15% at a minimum to be able to "brand" it yourself in the US. Once it's copied and slightly changed, you can slap whatever badge you want on there from Asia. We made a copy of the J-Blood aero kit from Japan for the AE86, I was in charge of "changing" the design by 15%, and I ended up covering up a couple of a vents, increasing the diameter of another one. Looking at it you couldn't tell the difference, but it was copied and sold as a J-Line kit. Pretty awful practice where no personal R&D goes into it and you're just making knock offs. Only upside is the lower price for the consumer albeit with inferior materials.

At least you realize in hindsight that that was shitty.

That is correct - from Oakville Motorwerks. They made the OG Scorza in Canada. SGT bought the IP for the exhaust when OM decided to close up shop and branded it the SCZA.

I bought an OG Oakville Scorza on the forums last year
