It was the water pump. Only the outer disk portion of the impeller remained… the fins and the inner disk were completely gone lol it was the bmw piece and iI assume it was the original.

Finely dissolved into my coolant system- hence the grey coolant symptom that prompted the thread. I suppose it is possible that a larger piece might be in a coolant jacket but I've been driving for about 50 miles with no symptoms now, and when I performed the flush before ordering the water pump, it seemed to flow freely. The post below shows what the old pump looked like when I took it off lol
