If so it seems possible that if the retaining clip wasn't seated properly that could have caused the rest of the destruction subsequently?

It's been a while since I did mine but from memory that seems plausible no?

I'm not sure what the term is for the part, but that is the ring that the four oil pump pistons push against and it rides on the needle bearings in the VANOS unit.

In your picture, I cannot see the securing clip or washer for the VANOS oil pump disc. That is a strong clip that retains the ring that has now fallen out onto the exhaust hub.
    Haha touche

The shop I used is a pretty well knows shop in SoCal and they work on bmws all the time so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt that they did the work correctly.

we will see once they give me more info

The shop said after taking a look at the VANOS system, the bearing inside shattered. He believes it was on the exhaust side. The same shop did the exhaust hub work a couple of months ago, but said that this was not related to that. The bearing that shattered was not an item you can rebuild. I have no idea what they are saying but after look at the photos, it looks bad.

So now we are trying to source a whole new VANOS unit. He believes getting a new unit will solve the issue. They are going to look for one, but if they can't I am just going to order the Beisan system. Totally sucks since I just spent so much on this car with the CSL intake hahahahahahah.

    See photos.

    What do you think?

It does not come with exhaust hub. Since you already put a $700 upgraded VAC hub on the car I assume you want to keep it?

Call up beisan and see if they can sell you a rebuilt VANOS with tbd OEM pump disc hole size.

Coincidence? Maybe something starved the bearing of oil and made it fail? Hard to do anything but guess really.
Yea, hard to play the blame game as I just want the car back. Whatever, its just money, right. bleh.

Thanks so much for the responses guys!

I did tell them to do the oil pump disk but they said that the exhaust hub was the only thing that needed to be changed.

See attached invoice of what they did.

Luckily it was discovered after swapping in a rebuilt unit.

Back when Naturally Agitated (RIP) was rebuilding VANOS units - he got my core back and said the bearings were shot and the core was not rebuildable. I thought I had noticed some play in the oil pump disc but he ended up confirming it.

Careful with the fitment of this unit and the VAC hub. Beisan started milling their own oil pump disc with smaller holes that won't fit op's VAC exhaust hub. If you order it make sure they send you one with the OE pump disc holes.

Good luck, hope they can get it back on the road soon!

    see below:

    Hey Julian,

Pulled the valve cover and looks like the vanos unit. The bearing came apart. I took some pictures but hard to see.

Sam, has seen that twice before and rebuilding the vanos wouldn't of fixed that issue. The bearing came apart seems like on the exhaust side.
