I did tell them to do the oil pump disk but they said that the exhaust hub was the only thing that needed to be changed.
See attached invoice of what they did.

Not really sure and his reply below. I called him after the fact and he said it was a bearing on the exhaust side.
see below:
Hey Julian,
Pulled the valve cover and looks like the vanos unit. The bearing came apart. I took some pictures but hard to see.
Sam, has seen that twice before and rebuilding the vanos wouldn’t of fixed that issue. The bearing came apart seems like on the exhaust side.

Would something like this be solved with a new VANOS unit like this: https://beisansystems.com/product/s5...s-11367838161/

Good luck, hope they can get it back on the road soon!

Ah you had this happen to you? What did you do to fix it?
Back when Naturally Agitated (RIP) was rebuilding VANOS units - he got my core back and said the bearings were shot and the core was not rebuildable. I thought I had noticed some play in the oil pump disc but he ended up confirming it.

Coincidence? Maybe something starved the bearing of oil and made it fail? Call up beisan and see if they can sell you a rebuilt VANOS with tbd OEM pump disc hole size.

If they did not remove the securing clip for the oil pump disc and left the VANOS unit completely stock, then there might be a problem with that VAC exhaust hub. Otherwise, it would be an installation issue like heinzboehmer said.
In your picture, I cannot see the securing clip or washer for the VANOS oil pump disc. That is a strong clip that retains the ring that has now fallen out onto the exhaust hub.

The shop said after taking a look at the VANOS system, the bearing inside shattered. He believes it was on the exhaust side. The same shop did the exhaust hub work a couple of months ago, but said that this was not related to that. The bearing that shattered was not an item you can rebuild. I have no idea what they are saying but after look at the photos, it looks bad.
So now we are trying to source a whole new VANOS unit. He believes getting a new unit will solve the issue. They are going to look for one, but if they can't I am just going to order the Beisan system. Totally sucks since I just spent so much on this car with the CSL intake hahahahahahah.
See photos.
What do you think?
If so it seems possible that if the retaining clip wasn't seated properly that could have caused the rest of the destruction subsequently?
It's been a while since I did mine but from memory that seems plausible no?
