Sounds like Big Mission may be the way to go. Quoted me $2800 for the bearings and 2500 or so for VANOS, all dependant on what needs done to the VANOS.

Ok, found a shop about 2.5hrs away in Loveland, CO that quoted me $2800 for the bearings. They're saying $5500 for the VANOS using Dr Vanos stuff - am I crazy or does that sound ludicrously high for the VANOS?? A new VANOS from Dr Vanos is $1500, new exhaust hub is $700 - does it require buying everything Dr Vanos sells to bulletproof the system??

That is insanely high. VANOS job over here is $1900 for everything. And DR VANOS sucks, you don't need a new VANOS or exhaust hub lol. Typical scammer shop.

I'd ask them for a breakdown on the Vanos for the parts and labor. The DrVanos unit is a reasonable buy for a lot of people, the redrilled disc and NEW hydraulic unit are a huge chunk of the price. The BMW valve cover gaskets parts have really sky rocketed in price lately, you are looking at nearly $500 retail just for those parts.

I personally don't think you need a new hub if the disc is redrilled, YMMV though.

Here's what they had to say:

"With vanos, associated parts, valve cover gasket, intake manifold gaskets, valve shims, random small pcv hoses and things if they are crumbling and shipping the parts breakdown is right about $3,000 and labor is about $2500 to replace all the parts and adjust the valves. "

They said there are more ecmormical ways to get it done, but it makes more sense to do it all in one go rather than open it up to do, lets say, the exhaust hub and find the timing chain guide is chipped, etc.

I've no reason to believe the VANOS is bad or needs anything, but its also something that gives no warning before it goes. And with 164k on it, I imagine it jeeds some TLC in the near future.

Yeah it's around 2k or 2.5k if a new hub is needed around here.

With the prices being quoted in CO, you could buy a used mid-mileage engine as a spare and have some leftover. Almost worth running the engine as-is. How many miles do you put on the M3 per year?

Is there a forum member near WY who has done a few VANOS overhauls?

I put between 300 and 400mi on it every week. I have about a 100mi commute.

$5,500 for Vanos seems out of line, even with the huge recent runup on BMW gaskets, etc.

I agree with George - I'd ask for a breakdown of the parts and labor.

Problem is the location. In SoCal there are dozens of qualified shops where you can have these jobs done for like $2-$3k each depending on specifics. It's a few day's drive to save a few thousand bucks.

Will they give you a complete breakdown?

Why are the pulling off the intake? And intake manifold gaskets make me think they are pulling the TBs? Is this the price for a head gasket (although that would likely be low for a HG)?

They better be doing a head gasket for 5.5k lol

A reman BMW short block is around 14k

Edit: 5.5k might only cover labor depending on time, rate, location

A HG at my shop is more than $5500.
