SMG Woes, Error Code 115

Has anyone experienced this code before? I’m getting around to finishing up my work over the winter. Which included thinning the wiring through the process of snip and pray (and somewhat check lol)

This code is new to me and I haven’t seen much on it online. It also throws a DME code 177 which is just a CEL due to SMG.

My lines have/had a ton of air in them from a bad seal so I’m in the process of slowly bleeding the car. As the bleed completion times are coming down originally ending around -500sec to now -80 to 100 I’m wondering if this code will prevent a successful bleed procedure.

Full on track car, no interior etc. didn't have the means to redo the harness this winter. So did this as a meantime solution.

Edit: to add, I did not snip anything that is SMG related

I saw this a few days late but thank you for sharing. I didn't realize BE had an SMG error code breakdown. I'll shoot them an email and maybe they can elaborate.

I did some coding on the cluster module and maybe other stuff. It was like 8 months ago and don't remember now. I wonder if I made something mad doing that. I'm currently in the process of trying to bleed the living hell out of this car. Had to fix a leak in my reservoir and hoping that makes a difference now.

BE said they aren't willing to give a remote diagnosis on this. Along with no other advice on the code.
SMG society also did not have any advice on this either.

I do have a spare smg computer i may try and plug in to see if this gives the same code

You may not think you cut something SMG related, but it's possible you did. There are other things other than the gear selector lever that are related to SMG wiring.

Did you cut the wires to the longitude acceleration sensor which is on the floorboard under the carpet under the passenger seat? Did you any mess with anything regarding the DSC system or brake system?

What year is your car?

If it's a 2001 or 2002 which is the mk20 car, it's possible you may have cut some wires to the lateral acceleration sensor which is under the a-pillar under the dashboard on mk20 cars. There are so many sensors and wires that are not directly related to SMG but talk to SMG via the can system.

Do you have any Trifecta of lights on the dash like DSC, ABS, brake light etc..

Thanks for the response. Longitudinal sensors is still in place. Confirmed function as you get a flashing SMG cog if this not functional. When I did my alignment one of the guys accidentally disconnected this while trying to hunt down a sound. Mentioned that I had threw the smg warning lights and this was the issue. Plugged in and good to go.

Car is an 04 with the MK60. No other trifecta of lights and everything is actually running happy. Few caveats below. All independent systems are free of error codes minus the SMG 115 and DME related.

The only lights present on the dash are:
Washer fluid tank (deleted well before this wiring fiasco)
Brake bad wear sensor light. Recently did my 996 conversion and didn't go with a sensor. I did confirm that this light wasn't on before removing old brakes w/ sensor.
- I guess maybe there's an odd chance this relates?
Dead speedometer- I posted about this as a quick question in the stupid questions thread. All of my wheel speed sensors are functional in inpa through the DSC & SMG computers. Speedo physically works. So I must have just snipped its output cable. I'm trying to figure out where and how to reconnect this now.


I guess there's a potential for the dead Speedo or brake pad wear sensor to cause this code. Speedo doesn't make much sense to me since the sensors are being read in their own computers properly



Brake pad wear sensor is the easiest to fix off hand. I'm putting a new slave cylinder in today or tomorrow, so I'll attempt to fix this and see if maybe this takes it away

I'm pretty sure the cluster is a major module for the can bus system. If the cluster is not generating or outputting the speed than anything else that needs speed is not going to be happy. Than anything else that needs speed is not going to be happy

From what I can tell can is still functional on the cluster. I disconnected the K-Bus pin and it immediately threw codes at me for a kbus error.

I'll mess around and depin can hi/low today and see if I generate new errors around the car.
Here's the pinout for the dash connection. I would assume my issue lies with pin 19 or 8.


Maybe I'm being boneheaded with the thought that if every other system is reading wheel speed on its own and apparently talking with no outside can errors. Then it shouldn't be an actual can error stemming from a dash issue. My thought right now is that the dash is still processing everything fine (no error codes) it's just not displaying speedo


The car runs and drives fine, it just has this strange code stored in it. If the car was acting up I'd be more likely to believe something else is unhappy or not talking.

Edit: I don’t want to seem as if I’m defensive or not looking to find a solution. In my little expertise it just doesn’t logically make sense that there’s a can related issue without error codes. Although I do have a thought that the brake pad sensor could be the fault here and easy enough to sort.

Update: fixed the brake pad wear sensor. Code still exists.

Pin 8 is still connected. Although I think I understand this one's purpose. It's an output signal for things like the factory nav and cruise control unit.
My issue is in the driver footwell with pin 19. There were some dirty looking splices down there that I think I remember cutting. Don't believe I saw them today.
I think this wire doubles back from the mk60 unit

Actually I'm fairly confident on this. Running back out to check lol

Snipped 19 right when it joins the wiring harness lmao. Not sure how I got to that. I tried to ignore anything near the cluster since I was doing it in car.

I'll have to remove the new tape around and find where the heck the junction point is at. Problem for tomorrow. Live and learn, hopefully this fixes the SMG issue. Not too confident though
