I drove one and the S58 is breathtaking! Kind of like the E9X M3, it's at another level over 80mph but the G8X keeps going and going. The interior is really, really busy, its like the spaceship version of the F8X...both iDrive versions. Unlike the F8X, the G8X is really comfortable during normal street driving.
There's one hang up with me...its so ugly. Hideous and hasn't grown on me at all since it came out.
I've instructed in a couple of G8Xs, I don't think it's as fast around the track as an F8X in stock form. It seems like a real handful especially if its in sport or sport +. Maybe its the drivers but we seem to get passed a lot for it being an M car. In the past, M cars in all run groups were at the front of the pack.Instagram: @logicalconclusion

Besides, 200 pounds is significant itself. 3-400 is huge. The g80 dimensions also make the e46 look small, and that matters a lot on a back road.
As for BMW performance in the modern era...the E46 CSL was comparable to the 996 GT3 and Corvette z06 around the Nurburgring. The modern car isn't even as fast-and not even close-as the prior generation GT3/hot Corvette.

-200ish removing tbe AWD system
-60 lbs removing the automatic
That's 260 lbs.
3950 - 260 lbs = 3690
Adjust the gas weight and you're between 3650 - 3730 lbs depending on options. G82 M4 CSL has an automatic so that's a 60 lb weight penalty.

These cars get heavier with every future iteration. The F87 M2 comp weighed 3600 lbs. Even the E46 M3 weighed 3400-3500.
I thought G8x would be significantly more. Google says:
G82 CSL: 3640
G82 Comp: 3880
G82 manual: 3690
G80 Comp: 3890
G80 manual: 3700
Still fantastic cars considering the weight.06 IB M3 ZCP

I suppose you could fault BMW for not trying to stay in that game over the years, but it is what it is and the two companies just have different priorities. Porsche has long been a pure performance brand, and BMW has always been a consumer brand that makes hot versions of their cars, even if the E46 CSL briefly topped the pile.Last edited by dukeofchen; 08-29-2024, 02:45 PM.'04 LSB Coupe 6MT

I do fault BMW, but obviously it was the right business decision considering their sales are through the roof and nobody cares about sports cars anymore. And it's not like it was just with the e46. The e90 and even f80 were comparable. Probably the e36 and prior too.
And Porsche hasn't been a pure performance brand since the 80s. Cayenne, Taycan, Macan, and Panamera make for far more sales than 911/Box/Cayman.

Ultimately though, the real comps for a G8x are equivalent sport coupe offerings from Merc, Audi, etc.
Blew my mind when I looked it up but even a base 911 starts at $120k these days, and realistically it'll be almost double the MSRP of a new G8x since literally everything is an added option on those things. To your point though, as a buyer an older 911 would be the performance upgrade more in line with the formula that BMW left behind.'04 LSB Coupe 6MT

I'm much happier driving the older cars even though they are undeniably slower and less capable.

I agree. I’ve tired the higher horsepower turbo cars and they didn’t do anything for me. I’m absolutely in love with older cars with N.A. power, hydraulic steering, less traction control, less electronics, and more oh shit moments around corners.
I was driving my E46 around today and it was so fun to wring it out. Even though it’s so slow haha06 IB M3 ZCP

It's the souless aspect of the car I hated most. And then the too busy interior. Steering was the most lacking feel imo.DD: /// 2011.5 Jerez/bamboo E90 M3 · DCT · Slicktop · Instagram
