What does a new S54 sound like?

We see videos all the time trying to diagnose noises. I am as guilty as anyone of these posts. The S54 is not a quiet engine. It's tough to know when it's broken. Having suffered a spun bearing a few months back, I bought a remanufactured engine from Rogue Engineering. Since I am in the break-in process, and the engine is new, I thought I would record the sound. This will be a good reference for myself down the road, and might help with my paranoia. This is what a new S54 sounds like.

Thank you for this. Sometimes I hear things in the engine bay and and I wonder. Great reference!

It sounds just like my engine

It took a usual M3 long crank to fire up as compared to non-M fires up instantly.

What is the name tag on vanos front?

Rogue remanufactures these engines, and that’s their serial number plate. I can’t recommend them enough if you need one.

Lots of options when spec'ing a build. Here's the link:

I replaced a 50,000 mile engine and I am shocked how smooth this one is so far. Haven't been over 5k yet tho.

Why did you replace your 50K mile unit?

They charge $2900 for Vanos service? lol....

Story to come on that one. Spun a rod bearing that was installed at 48,000 miles.

The Beisan parts are $23-2400. $2,900 ain’t bad.

Can't you get one from BMW for $14?

                      Is yours manual or smg?
I ask bc the little long cranking before it fired up. Same as mine and I assume the smg needs more time and so the delay.

I bought my 2006 (still have it) brand new. Showroom new is a fairly quiet engine. Not silent, but quieter than a 15+ year old S54 (and I own two).

Good to know. Mine is going to quiet down when I change this 40W break-in oil. Will post an updated vid after that just for reference.
