    Driveshaft CV joint, this look normal?

    Hey guys, can I get a sanity check? Trying to make sure this amount of movement / play is normal. I cleaned it out partially with brake cleaner and it appears to be okay visually. But I’ve never held a new one so I don’t know.



    Follow up, do I need to get ALL the old grease out before repacking, or can I repack it like this and send it?

    Looks normal.

    To pack the CV you really need to pull the CV off the driveshaft. Otherwise you won't get much grease into the boot. Just remove the snap ring on the end of the driveshaft and then remove the pinch clamp on the boot.

    You will need a new pinch clamp.

      Looks normal for gummed up old grease, mine was about the same binding points. To do it properly, you should take it apart fully and clean it, then repack it.

      I just did it the lazy way and threw a bunch of fresh grease in there while pulling it in and out to use some suction to pull it in. Managed to get an entire pack of grease in there, but it's just temporary for me while I'm having a cf one built.

        Thanks guys, can I use a generic CV boot clamp…? From McMaster for example. Should be fine right?

          As long as it's a crimp style cv clamp, you should be good. Just use the old one to confirm length.
          I just finished installing sec 1, 2 and 3 of my new exhaust tonight…torqued EVERYTHING on the rear suspension , subframe, etc down fully, hi vis tq marked and buttoned up, I now wish I wouldn't have been fucking lazy and cleaned out the cv fully before repacking.

            Yea man, the reason I'm in this situation to begin with is because I had to rush big time, and cut corners to get my car movable. Now, over a year later, I'm trying to right my own wrongs. This poor car hasn't been properly drivable since late 2023.

              I cant remember if the bolts are e12 or e14, but what will you torque them to? I think i remember setting it 80 or 85ft pounds.
              and while that's out, isn't it a perfect time to replace wheel bearings? I remember the exhaust was in the way when doing the driver side.

                I tried to add grease with out removing the CV. Found out the hard way it doesn't work. So $200 for a new CV.

                If you're adding grease to the CV, I guarantee the grease in the axle CVs is in worse shape.

                  Years ago I had a guy who worked for me do the RACP and the DS CV didn't have a gasket, just like Nate's, so it's been slinging grease for years. My axles do not have any leaks, so while I agree they likely need to be done as well, I will when I replace the wheel bearings. For now, it will have to do and not overly concerned as I haven't driven it in years, so unlikely to be an issue 😂
