Going to buy a tune, help me with a good “while you are tuning” checklist

I’m thinking of buying a HTE tune for my euro headers, was looking for feedback on a checklist of items to have HTE tune while in there (I’m assuming all of this can be done remote). Any good items that I am missing?

    Coding list
    • Euro header tune, euro section 1, dinan
    • SAP delete
    • Code out rear O2 sensors headers?
    • flash to pass,
    • rear windows open,
    • M track mode (Auto Interests may be able to do this)
    • 8100 rpm redline
    • Delete EWS?

With the euro headers and section 1, you could just run the factory euro tune and use Martyn's tool for the SAP delete, code out rear O2, 8100 RPM and delete EWS. The rest is general module stuff and can be done with NCSExpert - not related to the engine.

      Sparkplugs
      coilpack
      Pre cat o2s
      Tps
      Cps
      Fuel filter
      vanos

      That type of maintenance

^^^ add Fuel Pumps if not done already... Air, Fuel, Spark, Sensors... but TBone has you headed in the right direction.

        maw

EDIT... does anyone think the pedal sensors should be on this list?

Sorry but not tracking - most of those are regular maintenance items, what do they have to do with a tune (i.e. fuel filter)? Do you have to tell your engine you put in a new fuel filter?

For me, the thought process would be that it's a good time to baseline everything and be confident it wasn't failing or misreading during the tuning session. Most of those parts are not going to "add power" or necessarily fail anytime soon.

These cars are pretty old now too. If you've owned the car for decades and have been keeping up with the maintenance (or if you have great records that that happened under previous ownership), then you can disregard, but that's not the case for most enthusiasts. Plus, it's for peace of mind. It's not that expensive, relative to the cost of mods/tuning.

Also, I really don't like the idea of a tuner changing parameters to overcome or work around an issue that could have been solved with proper mechanical timing or fresh sensors for example.

I’d add injectors to that list, depending on miles.

Yes, at least a supersonic cleaning, if not full on replacement, esp if you plan to make another 50+hp where you'll benefit from bigger injectors (if you're tuning)

Anecdotal, but I'll put it out there. At ~140k miles, I really started modding the car, but before I began, I went crazy replacing everything. I then got an evolve airbox and their stage 3 alpha N canned tune. Some people reported problems with evolve and other tuners' alpha n efforts (this was back in 2017), but my car responded so well, and still to this day, runs like a bat outta hell. So I say, make sure the car is tip top before tuning/modding. I'm sure there are cars too that would or have responed well to tuning that weren't properly looked after, but I think this is a numbers game, and you want to set yourself up for success and not have too many variables present for why your car isn't quite running right or not making the power you think it should.

Sometimes it's a big issue that you may or may not even want to fix like slightly bent valves or slightly degradaed HG inbetwen cyl (but no oil/water mixing) and maybe you decide to just live with for a while or forever, but I think tired sensors and a subpar fuel system are the more common things and cheaper/easier to pre-emptively replace..

Ok that makes sense. I agree on replacing parts when they are old. This is why I tend not to shy away at throwing new parts at a problem. If you going to own the car does the long haul, you’ve got nothing to lose and much to gain.

My original question was beyond the parts, what coding options should I consider. I have not braved the dark web to down load INPA, so this is my chances to code in a bunch of stuff.

Ok, if it were me, I wound't necessarily turn off the emissions stuff becuase you CAN pass smog with euro parts. That's if you don't wanna reflash every smog time.

I would turn off EGT and cap the bung (smog doesn't need to see that in order to pass)

                              I wouldn't bother with EWS

Maybe hard braking (outer rings) and euro hazards (can't remember if it was euro or something else, but diferent flash pattern to catch attention).

But more importnat than that, HOW are you tuning? On a dyno, just a canned tune, or are you willing to put an AEM wideband into a bung to give Hassan your AFRs?
