Having a physical controller is so huge with modern OE carplay systems. To be honest the annoyances of touchscreen carplay on an aftermarket head unit really took the shine off of adding the functionality.

Add to that the fact that the factory radio / nav position sucks compared to modern screens that are built into the dash, and don't require you to completely take your eyes off the road to see or interact with them.

Ultimately, I've been questioning whether installing an AVIN has really been that much better than having my phone dash-mounted right in my field of vision with Google Maps, etc. on screen. Is it elegant? No. Is it functional? Yes.

If it wouldn't completely block the main AC vents a flip-up single DIN unit paired to a physical controller seems like it'd be the pinnacle of usability, even if it would look clunky and aftermarket. Don't know if something like that even exists though.
