    Bad fuel pump relay symptoms

My car is having trouble starting… wants to fire up and will for maybe 1 second and then stops. I used a code reader and it come back as a bad fuel pump relay. I now have the two fuel relays on order (bought the little green one to be safe). I also hear a click coming from the fuse box under the hood on the driver side (no idea what’s in there) but noticed a noise every time I turn the key to off. The fuel pump was replaced a handful of years ago and I’ve driven maybe a couple thousand miles since. Not sure if it’s priming but didn’t check if it’s getting power either. Will be the next step if the relay doesn’t solve my issue.

So my question is, if the fuel pump relay is bad why would the car seem to start and then stop? Is this a sign of the relay tripping? I even pulled the plugs and can smell fuel on the end of the spark plugs. Would that not be a sign that it’s getting some fuel? I’m suspicious that the relay is not the problem but it’s what the code reader came back with so will start there.

When connecting the battery up a few days ago it did spark a bit… that may be totally unrelated but putting the information out there.

Car ran fine a few days ago.

    Thanks for the help

Mine went out no warning, while driving down the freeway and wouldn’t turn over. Had to get it towed 60 miles. Mine didn’t exhibit any issues or signs so maybe it’s just yours giving you a heads up. Let’s us know if replacing the relay doesn’t work.

Will report back when they are replaced and thanks for the info.

Was trying to understand if I did something while working on the car this weekend… am a bit puzzled

Only one fuel pump relay in the trunk.

I would measure the voltage across the two wires to the pump during priming time to verify.
Double check the ignition coil harness gnd is bolted to the head just above the ex manifold

Good call - the ground looks good and secure. I did replace the coils (Delphi) and plugs (Ngk) this weekend as preventative maintenance so that is timely. The car didn’t seem to want to start after the new plugs/coils yet the code reader is telling me it’s a fuel pump relay… I then reinstalled the old plugs and coils but no luck starting even then.

The second fuel pump relay (the green one) is the one under the hood on the driver’s side, I think? Link below. I ordered both this green one and the black one for the trunk to be safe.

Only one relay in the trunk for all US cars
