Cooked Oil & Grime removal from valvetrain.

Looking for an efficient and safe way to clean my valvetrain.

After having the VC off, the discovery of cooked oil and grime is atrocious, and scary. I've tried to do some research on my best options.
With the car already having RB done I want to be super careful what products I decide to use.. AMSOIL makes a good cleaner that Ive heard good things about but nothing from s54 owners, also LIQUIMOLLY, but again limited info. If you have experience deleting the grim please chime in. Thanks!

Better to leave it as is. That oil staining is cosmetic. When your S54 eventually needs a headgasket, you can have the machine shop hot tank the cylinder head and it will come out looking brand new.

Interesting.. I will be adjusting the valve clearances this weekend, should I carefully try and remove some gunk by hand or not even bother?

Don't touch it. Imagine knocking a glob loose that then blocks an oil passage and starves the engine. Run shorter OCIs with quality oil (good detergency)

Any recommendations? I run the OEM BMW oil, 10w60. Have heard AMSOIL has good a detergency from a Project Farm video.

^ this. the PO of mine was following the service indicator on the dash so the car was getting 15k mile oil changes. It left a good amount of varnish and deposits in the valvetrain, enough to where it made adjusting some of the valves difficult with the valve rocker arms getting stuck on the shaft from the oil/carbon deposits.

Since then I have been doing 5k mile OCI and the last valve adjustment was much easier than the first.
"your BMW has how many miles!?"

Do regular oil changes. 1.5 to 2k miles. Use a rich calcium oil and it will recover. Many say oil flushes are not good, and probably I would not do it either. While the cover is off grab a rag and brake cleaner and go at it.

I wouldn't. When you go cleaning things inside an engine, there is a greater chance that you will introduce some other debris into the engine. Less is more here. Stick to the valve adjustment and your regular oil changes of 10W60.

Thank you guys for the input! It's funny because my cousin was at my house when I was performing the Vanos upgrades, and he was telling me I should be pumping in seafoam while the VC is off.
I tried explaining to him (a know it all Base Corvette guy) that is not what you do lol. He doesn't understand why I invest so much time and care into a 23yr old german car... An engine is an engine type guy.

NAM3 is a load of help and therapy lol

Well best way take it off and put it in an ultrasonic cleaner….
                    pther good way
ut in nice fresh high quality oil and change it after 1,000 -3,000 miles (definetly not longer than a few weeks) then do it again/ look at the color of the oil and depending on this do it again and again and again and when your color looks better do it longer like for example 5000 miles and so on
also always change the oil filter

agree except for the part with the brake cleaner……don’t ever put that In an engine.
