    Wheel stud conversion question

So I bought a wheel stud conversion kit for my car, but just out of curiosity because I've never seen this done, but would it be safe to do a conversion WITH the wheel still on?

By that I mean would removing each bolt one by one and installing the stud one at a time be plausible and safe?

Asking because its a bit of a pain to change it out in my complex as I don't have a driveway.

    Thanks in advance

Only if you got the studs that have an allen key hole on the end. I suppose it's possible.

As mentioned it's possible if you have ones with the internal hex on the end, but why? If I were you, I'd load my car up with my jack and jackstands, and drive to an empty parking lot and do it there. It's such a safety-critical item, and I wouldn't want to risk improper application of threadlocker, and end up a mess of it on my wheels or rotors.

Wheels on would be an unsafe and unreliable risk.
The hub threads need to be cleaned so that the thread locker can do its job.
Some brands of studs need to be torqued when installed so that the wheel nuts loosen before the stud.

I wouldn’t do that. You need the loctite to set for 24 hours before torquing the stud. Just take the extra time to put the car on jacks and do all 4 hubs at once. This is something you shouldn’t cut corners with.

To mirror other posts you want to chase those threads with an M12x1.5 tap and some wd-40 before installing the new studs. Unlikely the tap would fit with the wheel on the ground. Do it right. Wheel studs are one of the few things on the car you want to make sure are done right.

Has anyone else had problems with tire installers not wanting to touch a car with studs? I had a blow out on the 5 coming back from San Diego, and had my car towed to an America's Tire, to get a tire to get home. I had to beg and plead them to work on the car with the studs, and they wouldn't reinstall the wheel without me buying new bolts (they uninstalled the studs). The bolts they used were too short, and not exactly the safest, but they would only do that and wouldn't touch the car with studs. This has caused me to second guess using them on a car that sees a lot of street driving. They make tire changes a lot easier, but not so much so for me that it is worth the risk of getting stranded without a tire place willing to work on the car.

I have never heard of this but not surprised. There are a ton of people running cheap chinese crap wheel studs and they don't want to accept the liability after working on your car.

If you're not doing doing track events or running spacers there really is no point in using the wheel studs. You can get a couple M12x1.5 wheel hangers to make the tire changes easier while keeping the lug bolts.

BTW... I have a full set of OE lug bolts in decent shape, PM me if you want em.

Even if you're running spacers, extended bolts are an option. I don't run studs on any car that's just for street use.

No one's given me trouble for them yet

If I raced, this is the only way I'd convert to studs:

When we need new hubs that's what we are getting. But there is no issue with high quality wheel stud conversions changed on a regular basis depending on usage.

Even press fit wheel studs need to be changed in race applications if you're doing hot wheel swaps routinely.

I plan on marking the tip of the wheel stud so its readily apparant on a visual inspection if they are backing out.

I have replaced studs without removing the wheel. I didn't care about the wheels so I just zipped them off and on. These had the internal hex heads.

But if you care about the wheel finish then its worth it to remove the wheels.

I convert to studs as I'm not faffing about, trying to index holes to holes to start the bolts.
As for shops refusing to work on cars with road wheel studs, most domestic cars have studs . Plus those studs are abused by zip gun jockeys.
