How much play is expected on both Vanos gears? I’m tackling Vanos now and noticed a lot of side to side movement. I know that anti rattle kits are sold to help play but is the play detrimental to Vanos operation or just noise? I will see if I can attach a video.

The rattle kit reduces in and out play. Side to side is necessary.
Honestly, I would not mess with them. As long as you keep up with oil changes, the bearings in these splined gears should not wear out.Last edited by Slideways; 06-15-2025, 06:11 AM. -

Maybe you meant the roller bearing on the splined shaft -- in this case, try to feel if it has any axial (fore/aft) plays and ignore the radial plays. BC the shaft only moves fore/aft to rotate the cam. Using the anti rattle kit is neither a PnP nor an easy job -- the parts need to be lapped to fit with zero axial plays and not binding, and this can take hours to get it right. Most people unneccessary got into this and ended up with a big headache.Comment

It doesn't show in/out (axial) movement which should not have any plays. Side to side (radial) plays is needed to compensate for hubs to vanos pistons accentricity.Originally posted by Ubaderb View Post
