    SMG issue

    2005 BMW M3, 56K miles
SMG been running perfect until today when bringing car back to storage. After parking, I had the vehicle in neutral and it rolled just bit before initiated the parking brake.
    1. The pump primes
    2. It goes into gear (I can tell from putting in neutral (it rolls) and 1st gear (does not roll)
    3. The SMG indicator is lit but does not change display.
    4. No yellow COG
    5. It cranks but does not start

I have a reader but not with me and will have to bring it back for codes later this week.

Might not be SMG, but rather an EWS sync needs to be performed. Mine one day, completely out of the blue, had the same thing happen.

Thanks, will def look into it and bring the reader. It may have happened during the slight roll forward.

      Found this for EWS reset:
Basic EWS Reset – Battery Disconnect Method
This is the simplest first step and works in some cases. Steps:
      1. Turn off ignition, remove the key.
      2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
      3. Wait 15–30 minutes to allow modules to fully discharge.
      4. Reconnect the battery (ensure the connection is solid).
      5. Turn the key to position 2 (on) and leave for 10 seconds (but do not crank).
      6. Try to start the car normally.
💡 If the EWS module was “confused,” this may reset it enough to allow a normal start.

        2. engine was off in this case. However with engine idling, car will roll even in gear as SMG disenaged clutch when idling.
        5. cranking means SMG is fine and in neutral.

Best to use inpa to read EWS status, and resync if needed. Scanner dongle might not work for this.

Yes the engine was off, could not start it. I used a Schwaben scanner and did find starter enabled = no, tried to sync using the DME(DDE)-EWS menu function without luck. Error message could not communicate, I assume the scanner does not have the functionality.

Can anyone confirm INPA can sync the DDE/DME-EWS with a function and not have to edit/write directly to the boot sectors?

Yes. I used INPA to sync mine. If I remember correctly an error message appears, but you just click ok or whatever and continue on. It worked.

Ok now to locate someone in the Chicagoland area who has INPA, I don't have a windows laptop or the cable.

I didn't see any error codes just live data.

                      Are there any stored DTCs?

I did not snap pics of the scan codes.

Use inpa to read the EWS status to find out what causes the disabled crank, such as P/N, SMG, or key/ews. DME is not related to no crank issue.

It cranks, just won't turn over. The live data show starter is disabled and starter blocked due to P/N.

Are you sure this ews status was read with gear in neutral or gear engaged? It said it's not in neutral. IF starter is disabled then it couldn't crank -- conflicting with fact. Or did someone bypass the the EWS by shorting out pin1 and pin2 together?
