Is there any way to switch "OFF" heated mirrors?

I was troubleshooting my radio yesterday and I happened to touch the side view mirror glass, which was very warm to the touch (guess heated mirrors are working!). Key was in first position mode, HVAC was off and I was only working on the radio. Window defroster(s) were off too during this time.

That brings me to my question, are the heating elements in the sideview mirrors always ON?

I did not recall this in my 2004 M3, but it is occurring in my new 2002 M.

They are always hot on mine. Probably why they go brown so fast. You can just unplug them if you dont need them and make them last longer.

I think you can turn them off by setting SPIEGELHEIZUNG_VERBAUT to nicht_aktiv in your ftm and btm modules. Or you can just pull the wires. I think they're always on otherwise.

Always on and I've had mine unplugged for years. Basically never replugged them when I replaced the original browning mirrors.

I fee like ideally they’d come on with the rear defroster 🤔

they are not always on, they activate based on the outside temp the car reads from the outside ambient temp sensor. i believe its somewhere around 50 degrees Fahrenheit and below is when they activate.

Looks like pulling fuse #25 should do the trick...at least the passenger side. Somewhat confusing on the fuse guide whether it is the drivers side as well as another fuse location is not stated for it.

This can't be the default behaviour. It's dead hot in middle of summer and these mirrors will be heated.

According to WDS I have on file...Mirror Heating
The mirror heating is controlled by the SPM-FT and SPM-BT in the doors. The heating is active as of terminal 15.
The relevant SPM switches the mirror heating off when there is under-voltage. Switch off at 10.8V and switch on again at 11.6V.
