I've got a large 5L jug of BMW MTF-LT2 transmission fluid that I used about half of last time I did a transmission fluid service 7 years ago. The jug has been sitting on a shelf with the cap on since then. Has moved around, spent some time being stored on a shelf outside in my back yard, some time in my basement.
Is it still usable with ~100% confidence or should I throw it out and get some new stuff? Part of me wants to believe that if the bottle is sealed at least as well as the transmission is, why would it be any worse for fluid to sit in a jug? But I also know enough chemistry and materials science to know that I'm not an oil chemistry expert and maybe all sorts of weird things could happen.
