I only do the smg bleed and adaptation when battery is north of 12V. Even with battery charger on the car I have reached the brown out limit for the SMG electronics. Granted I have a little lithium battery…

The smg pump can very easily get air locked like that. Its messy but all i've needed to do in the past is pull the csl reservoir out and use syringe to fill the sump.

Drove it around for an hour - no more COG light and it shifts smoothly. Going to leave it alone for now and find another unnecessary project to pursue.

Thank you all for the help! This relocation hit a couple snags compared to the first time I performed one… zero issues, bled fine on the first try!

I’ll move the wiring around later for a cleaner install.

Do you attribute the issue to the MLR pump?

I’m pretty sure that it was air in the lines like you mentioned and filling the pump tank first was the winning move. I was rushing when I put this together and just assumed the bleed procedure would handle all the air, but I emptied half of a pentosin can into the pump before even filling the reservoir.

I’ll try the MLR accumulator and newly rebuilt pump combo again this weekend because I’m a sucker for pain. I had one of those “oh god what did I do, I’m just going to put it back with the old stuff” moments knowing that, logically, that wouldn’t make a difference if something had broken (knuckle, rod selector, slave cylinder, springs, etc.) during the process. I’m sure if I applied the same technique with the new setup I’d have success.

The first time I did the relocation I pulled the pump and reservoir out at the same time. This second time I used a completely dry pump and I’m sure just pouring CHF11S straight into the reservoir just didn’t fill the pump tank enough.

Cool man. Let us know how the MLR pump is.

I'm running an MLR pump currently. I refreshed my original pump, but I bought an MLR rebuilt as a backup (was less than half the price they currently are). So anyways, I ran my refreshed unit for a couple of months and then put in the MLR. No issues, been fine for a few thousand miles.

Seeing as I tend to get doubles and triples of things, aside from the MLR pump I also have another rebuilt SMG pump with the MLR seal refresh kit, new temperature sensor, new pump pressure sensor, a new SMG motor and the upgraded MLR accumulator sitting around. I may put that up for sale since I can’t just hold on to these things forever!

Unless you put THAT unit in LOL and sell the other one

I have two of these… this one just doesn't have the motor wired yet!

Also, just as a general update - I installed the other pump combo that's identical to the one I just described above (but the one I ultimately installed is the aluminum tank upgrade as well) and following eacmen advice to fill the pump tank first and it worked flawlessly.

                            Its this:

MLR is now offering an upgraded aluminum reservoir tank for the BMW E46 M3 SMG II pump. The reservoir is designed to replace the stock plastic tank.

Probably not, but since I was rebuilding two pumps I decided to go all out with one of them!
