    Head bolt torque situation

    Hey Everyone,

So im torquing down my head (after installing new head gasket) and i get through the 30ft pounds, 90 degree rounds. The final 90 degree round was going just final until the final 4 outside bolts. I was having trouble getting footing and the Snapon RESET mid pull.

So now im like WTF sweet baby jesus. my questions are:

    1) Because its the last 4 outside bolts, can I just get those and retorque them through a 3 levels?

    2) Do I need to repurchase nrw head bolts and do the process all over again?

    3) Do I need a new head gasket?

    4) Or none of the above and just redo the last for bolts woth the current ones?

    Thanks!!

Don't quite understand what you meant. You lost track of the final 90* turn due to the digital display reset to zero? If you marked the bolt for indexing, then you know the angles it had been turned. This is why it's smart to put an index mark on the bolt head before doing the 90 + 90 angle pull.

I didnt index the bolts. I never would have thought the snapon would have just blanked out like that. I guess I know for next time.

So can I just redo the outside bolts with new or existing?
should I just get 14 new bolts from fcp abd start over?
Can the head gasket be reused?

Pull the bolt((s) you lost track on and start the process with a new bolt.

New bolts is the only real answer here.

I've had issues with my Techangle (I assume that is what you are using), where if you pull on the very end, on the cap, you can just barely unseat the cap which causes the batteries to loose contact and then it turns off. That or it needs new batteries.

If remove only the outer bolts for new bolts then the head can warped, so I suggest to remove all bolts evenly and use new bolts.
head gaskets: keep the head locked while changing the bolts then maybe gasket can be reused

read the manual of the techangle.

It must be turned at a certain pace for accuracy, Check your calibration report

Mine is 30 degrees per second, any slower the gauge will reset ( the techangle thinks i have stopped )

There should be a resume button or if you remember the angle the gauge was at before it went zero.just subtract that number and turn them to the new value

The battery cap goes bad afterwhile. They will ask to replace it if you send it in for recalibration. If they don't ask then tell them to replace it.

I'd be inclined to replace the outer bolts one at a time if it was mine. That's a super common practice in the diesel world, going from bolts to studs and replacing them one at a time seems have no effect on the HG of cylinder head flatness.

replace the 4 bolts (if they are the suspect ones) one (1) at a time in sequence to get you back to the same start point before the "incident"
