Am I mad for wanting to switch back to halogen tail lights?

So I've been contemplating switch my tail lights back to halogen. My M is a 02, and I put OE LEDs in it about 5 or 6 years ago. I am thinking about making it more period correct by putting halogens back in. Another thing is that they are cheaper if I ever needed to buy new housings for whatever reason, and if a bulb goes out, I don't have to replace the entire assembly (to fix it properly anyway). Also, you hardly ever see Ms with halogen tails anymore, and when I do see it, it looks so much cleaner to me these days........talk me out of switching back LOL.

Beyond the added cost, if you like them better, then just do it. I have the red/orange tail lights for my OG and i cant imagine it without them. I do think the LEDs look better for the red/orange combo but the price difference wasnt worth it to me
so, if you can sell your LEDs for the cost of the older atyle, then get what you really want because otherwise, everytime you look you wonder if you should

I'm in the same boat. Have amber led's and am tempted to go back to halogens as well, but being a TiAg, i think it needs the amber and not sure how great those look not being led, they look more orange

LED master race. So much better than preLCI.

I love the look of the LED tail lights, but I don't love the price of replacement. Mine went out and it was a real PITA to fix.

Yea, the regular ones do look a little more orange. But maybe after a while they will start to look more amber from UV exposure......BTW, your username made me crack up just now LOL.

I replaced my driver side one about 2(?) years ago, and I remember it sucked to find one quickly and it was expensive. Part of the reason why I am thinking about switching back. I like OE for lighting and body panels, so I am looking towards the future of expense for these cars to keep mine on the road without selling an organ for a factory part. I never got on with aftermarket lighting. I just don't like the way the Eagle and Depot LEDs look. They just look "off". So I might as well go back to OE halogen, and just replace bulbs instead of the entire assembly.

                    three tiers of tailights

                    - halogens - old school cool
                    - early leds - new/cool at the time, but generally considered to be transitionary/ugly in retrospect
                    - modern/oled - tailights actually designed to look good, not just led bulbs retrofitted into an old style housing

Just do whatever you like ?
Keep the LED taillights around so you can switch back whenever you feel like it ?

I chuckled at this LOL. There was a period in the 2000s when the Honda tuners were putting LEDs on their cars, and it kind of ruined the look. Factory or not.

OEM LED looks great in my opinion. The aftermarket LED you can see the plastic surrounding the tail light looks like a darker tint, where the OE/OEM ones are pretty uniform all around.

I replaced one tail light in my Non-M e46 facelift coupe about 4 years ago, a ULO one and looked identical to genuine one. I wish i ordered the other side as they were only $220 at the time on FCP Euro, and you can get amber LED as well. Kinda sucks to go through my order history on FCP euro and see things i cant buy anymore.

                            Sell me your LED tails.

                            Simple.

elrichmeister It is crazy. I went on ECS tuning and the OE LEDs are like $750 for the driver side and $530 for the passenger side. OR, you can get the set for a low price of $1,600.
